since you said its misleading I'm going to guess a different kind of answer... I'm going to say that you don't need to pull any from the barrell because there are already pairs in the barrell so therefore there is no use for you to pull any out, I hope that makes some sense... but that's my guess

Within a room you have a barrel full of water. Inside the barrel within the water are 50 red socks and 50 blue socks.

As you approach the barrel and peer down into the water, the lights go out and it is pitch black. You cannot see a thing and cannot find your way out of the room.

As you begin to become overtaken by panic, you hear a voice that asks in a mocking tone "How many socks must you pull from the barrel before you obtain a pair of the same color?" The voice also states that the right answer will illuminate the room allowing you to find your way out.

You know Pyr, I would have never thought of it from this angle. Really good answer, but a key word in the puzzle was "obtain".

can you explain why it is 3? what's getting me is to "obtain a pair of the same color". since we are dealing with probability, nothing should be certain.

If you have 50 red socks and 50 blue socks and you pull out 3 socks, you can only get two socks of the same color with a kicker or all three the same color. No matter what order you pull them in three socks will leave you with a pair of the same color.
