Hacker on DC.

I've already emailed the abuse address regarding this issue, but just as a warning to other DC'ers, a hacker (player name was exdemic) appeared today on DC firing paladin and goliath tank projectiles all around the map. He did this for some time, and for three waves, I was the only one who voted to kick him. After I typed several indications in text chat that the guy was cheating, people finally started coming around (keep in mind, this individual was spam-firing these tank shots at friendlies non-stop between waves, in addition to obliterating every monster in sight during the waves). He apparently took offense to that, and posted my IP address and GUID multiple times before being booted. Later, while I was busy writing an email to the admins, he signed in under my medic's name, and reset the character to level 5. So I lost 90 levels.

Later, as I was trying to build my character up from scratch, he signed in under a new name, exdmc:

The server crashed shortly after his last comment. Correlation does not indicate causation, I know, but that's one hell of a coincidence.

Apparently this guy can get information from anyone, as he posted Pk'er's IP and GUID twice during the above game. The stats being reset is kind of my own fault, as he talked me into doing 1v1 TAM and told me to open a server IP which downloaded a package (this was before he started using the tank weapons.) I'm not sure what the package was, but I'm guessing it could have been let him hack my CD key. In any case, this individual seems to get a kick out of screwing with other people, so be careful. I would say vote kick him on sight, but that didn't do me much good and, hey, no one else seems to do it on their own, so why should you?

I'm sorry. I just don't like the fact that I got punished because I was the only person who gave a crap about what this guy was doing and took the necessary steps to have him taken out. And it's not that I lost 90 levels - I can make that up in a couple weeks, easy - it's the principle behind it that gets me. The server doesn't have safeguards against users hijacking accounts to blackmail people into complying with their dishonest play style? Not to rehash Acyd's thread, but what happened to family friendly?

next time make sure you type in "admin please look at this"
that way the admin can just do a search to look at a specific part of the log file

It still amazes me that someone would waste their time doing this. let alone with a game this old.

I did indeed type that, even before voting to kick.

Update: just saw the hacker under a new name, exdemikk. I didn't stay on long because I was under my Eng account and didn't want him finding out and resetting that, too.

I was playing yesterday evening for a while and noticed that when he first joined the match he shouted my name and ID and thought it was indeed weird how he got that information. Fortunatly I stopped playing shortly after he appeared to missed all of this but yes, just to confirm, this player was indeed up to something suspicous.

Might go and check my characters just to make sure they're ok, sorry for your loss of levels tho m8, don't the server keep a backup of them somewhere?

If I see him/her, I will take care of it.

As for the backup stats, I'm not going to request nor expect any favors; from what I've read, digging through data files to restore characters is time-consuming, and Dru and Shan don't have time in excess these days (again, from what I've read.) I'm thankful enough that the server is just up and running; a minor setback like this doesn't bother me.

It's not as time consuming as you would think. The whole process should take less than 10 minutes, depending on how large the RPG file is. Actually changing the data is quite easy to do(restore level and class is all that is needed) and should take less than a minute.

Update: The hacker has crashed the server, after being kicked repeatedly by myself and other players. I've sent the abuse report already with all the details, just again giving a warning.

I know it was him because he warned us that if we kicked him again, he would crash it. And as the "time standing still" phase occurred (players and monsters not responding, weapons not shooting, same thing that happens every crash), I looked at the spectators and saw a user named "warn3d" had just joined before the crash. This was also different than other server crashes, because instead of starting over from wave 1 on a new map, when I rejoined it was the same map (Romra) and the same wave (5). Everyone had just been booted off and had to rejoin.

He's using different names now, most being some variation on exdemic (he even used "notxdemic"... how clever), with the exceptions of warn3d and f*pf*pj**z (what a charming individual). I have screenshots to prove all of this, and again I've already sent an email to the admins with more exact details. Just warning my fellow players: if he tries to join, votekick him ASAP.

He's crashing the server repeatedly. Crashed IronDiety until it was lost, and now is crashing Insidious. He's threatening to crash it if we keep kicking him, and I keep pressing people to kick him, because I don't think cheating should be allowed on this server. And he also threatened to reset my stats again, and he probably will. Again, why doesn't this server have safeguards against this type of thing?

Yet another update:
Yup. He reset my stats again. Went from level 27 to level 5. And apparently, he had been crashing the server so much tonight, that people weren't even voting to have him kicked. Desert was on, and he couldn't care less, despite the fact I asked him to add his vote. And I just went to join in under a different name, and it says my IP address is banned! This is ridiculous. The fact that this guy can run amok and do whatever he wants with the server is just disgusting. I didn't donate my hard-earned money for this sort of thing to happen, and quite honestly, I'm about ready to give up all hope for this place. I think I'm going to take a break from DC until something is done, because at this point, I'm way too angry to get any enjoyment from it.

An admin is not enough in this case... little can be done as an admin when faced with a hacker. You need the actual owners... and since they are always busy, you might not get the help you require.

It was 5.16.11 at 9:39pm AZ time according to my sys (I think AZ is now MST, the day light savings always throws me off).

@Locrian, when I join a map and am immediately requested to kick vote someone ... not going to happen, I don't know what's going on after less than 10 seconds. Sorry someone seems to be targeting you, had I been on longer I would have tried to help but kick voting doesn't seem to be any kind of deterrent.

Anyway, next thing I know Loc is gone and someone calling him/herself "tra" hit us with this nice spam (see screen shot) and was gone.

figures..............I'm usually in bed at that time. All of you keep me posted as to the dates and times this joker shows up. I will stay up late.

Demon you have to keep in mind that if what Locrain stated is true then the hacker also has his CD key, just in case you were thinking of banning the hackers cd key.

To be honest, I can't see any ways of banning him via CD Key. (s)he has already shown that (s)he's capable of getting anyones key as mentioned already about other player ID's being spammed in all chat. So If you were to ban em, whats stopping em getting someone elses key and doing the same?

We ban by several methods and rarely by CD key as CD keys are a dime a dozen for such an old game.
