how do I open a downloaded map into unreal editor. To be more specific, I want to open up DM-8-move in unreal editor to take a peek around because recently I somehow moved through the floor of the chest board and enter a secret room but no one has ever seen it and even doubts that I saw it. I would like to get to the bottom of it, no pun intended.

I tried to find DM-8-Move through ut2004/maps but couldn't find it. Is their another file that may contain a downloaded map?

You have to install the map to open it.

I can be more helpful then that. The map is in an area known as your 'file cache' (which happens to be a folder in your directory called 'Cache' ya-know) and not in your maps folder. Sure, you could probably get a program to install it to your game from there, but try looking into your Cache folder if you don't plan on editing or saving it or anything. May as well not be a jerk and laugh at you, even if I can't help but smile remembering when I learned about that.

EDIT: Just so you know, some places (maybe including this one) don't really like it when you use programs to 'steal' files from your Cache folder, so you might want to think about that as stealing if you plan on using it like that.

Such as those other servers that steal the engineer class and latest versions of DruidsRPG that haven't been released yet. I've also seen the DCMonsters on other servers as well.

Thank you, you have been very helpful. I am in no shape or form a computer savvy person. I know enough to get by however. I am a structural engineer and if you was to ask me any questions about any type of construction, it would seem awfully simple to me as these questions are to you, but I am not going to crack jokes or poke fun. I am going to explain it to the best of my ability. So, you do the computer bit and I will continue to build the places you work in. Thanks again. What would be a good program to use? The cache folder looks like hexadecimal code or something <--- see, I do know something!

Another thing that is totally of subject but... I don't think people should think of any alterations done to maps or mutators they built as stealing. It should all be consider freeware. I mean, epic lets us do all this with their editor and they ain't complaining when we alter their game so really people have no right to consider any of this theirs. In my opinion, those people are stealing the game from epic and all of us. It belonged to epic and they sold it to us. We all bought the game and an awesome game it is. It is ours. We all have rights to what is put out there. That is my opinion. So if I get a letter in the mail from Epic saying I am in the wrong, I would step down. If I get an E-mail from joe blow saying he didn't like me opening up his UNREAL map in UNREAL editor... Well, you get my point. But to be clear, I wouldn't alter someone else s map. Imitation is the ultimate form of flattery and I wouldn't want to give someone else that kind of credit for my work; However, I wouldn't mind if someone altered mine. As far as my intentions here, I just want to take a gander at it and admire it... and find that #$%^*&^ room! lol, well anyway, that is my take on it. I'm sure I will get someone who disagrees but...

I would consider it wrong if someone physically stole code that hasen't been released however but if it is put out there, then no.

Well, I found out how to change a cache file into a map manually but decided to download a cache extractor instead. It worked great and I found the room... Unfortunately the room is actually a smaller rendering of the entire room or sky... So no hidden room after all... I had to find out though and it is an awesome map Gotta give credit where credit is do. Very nice.

It really depends on the wishes of the author. Epic doesn't complain about mod authors, because they gave everyone permission to make mods. The mods do not interfere with sales of their product, but in fact it helps. Many authors will attach a disclaimer to their code. Many mod authors use a GPL license which allows users to modify their mods even further, as long as the new author gives credit to the original, and the new mod also falls under GPL.
There are mod authors that do not like other people modifying their work, but I think the biggest concern is not giving credit to the original author.

Agreed. I also believe that credit should be given to the original author of coarse but wouldn't any mod done to unreal technically be GPL or am I mistaken, I mean, can someone really legally claim all rights to a mod of a piece of software developed by another party?

No.
Unreal itself doesn't fall under GPL
Mods are not part of the actual unreal program. They use a script language called unrealscript.
Most mods take advantage of a technique call sub-classing. The sub-class doesn't modify any original code, just extend it. Think of it like a tree, where the base code is the trunk and each mod is a branch...when everything is loaded, the code at the ends of the branches take precedence over the parent.
for example: DruidsRPG extends Mysterial's UTRPG. UTRPG is loaded first, then DruidsRPG will load. The functions in DruidsRPG will be used instead of the functions with the same name in UTRPG. Those functions in DruidsRPG will then execute the UTRPG functions if they are still needed.
No part of Mysterial's UTRPG was copied to DruidsRPG (That I know of)

Ahhh, I see. So basically it is like object oriented programming where the overall program belongs to all of us but some code that has only been added belongs to the writer of that code? I am an old school basic guy, I no little about OOP and how all that works but I'm learning. In other words, Epic which original dealt in freeware, has little to do with the mods that have been ADDED? Am I on to something or am I still way off base?

Another thing, would you think java or C++ is more like unrealscript? Is their a good book on unrealscript? I have studied some Basic and C in college but an article by tim sweeney recommended I study an object oriented language and I have a book by deitel & deitel on Java, is that a good language to prep for unrealscript? Any other advice on reading material for unreal modding would be greatly appreciated too.

Oh and isn't unreal and unrealscript in assence the same thing. I know unrealscript makes the unreal engine and unreal is run in the unreal engine along with many other games, right?
