So anyone have issues with what Rapier stated?...or anyone have reasons not do make it happen? Think about it, if it was coded into the game that would mean it would make a highest level player into the moderator for the map or in other words the regulars which can be trusted above noobs. And who are those you might ask?...well for the most part Desert, and demon who is already an admin, and the occasional cribbage... and etc

If there are no problems with this idea, why not do it?

There are high level players who are not very considerate. Just because you play a lot doesn't make you admin material.

Unfortunately, this server does have owners and administrators who "patrol" and just like the local police force, we cannot catch everyone who violates the rules posted.

It is very difficult to catch those players who do not abide by the rules and unless we happen to be monitoring or playing at the time, we depend on the chat logs and other logs to pick up the violators. The best way to to police those players is to PM an admin with name/map/date/time so we can look at the logs.

Some of your ideas and thoughts are very good and will be brought to Dru and Shan's attention but realize that what you think makes a good "moderator" and what Dru and Shan think could very well be different.

One of the things I have noticed is that more and more players are complaining about something they do not like about the server, comparing it to other servers available. The complaining needs to stop since it leaves a very negative feeling among other players.

The solution is very sinple--if you do not like how the server is set up or do not like the rules and policies in place, please find another server to play on. Most of us who have played on DC for a long period of time do so because we like the way it is configured. No one is forcing you to play here.

+1 to what Demon said.

A higher level does not necessarily mean the player is more trustworthy. This is a bad idea.

good idea!

now there have been times when I have joined and there was noobs on and causing probs and they where the highest play so that would make them a moderator and can kick the just joined regular player when we warn them about their actions....so the highest play idea is not a WISE one.
now if druid and shan discussed with the other admins and made a list and privately asked the person if they would agree to being a moderator and then have a coded list with log-in to access they limited controls for the job and one of the things would be to generate a log of things specific to whats going on prior to the log-in so its faster to access to verify the actions.
i'm not sure how it all can be setup but it should be possible to do and if anyone over steps the rules/ system their pulled from the list.
I also feel that it should be someone that would be skittish about having to do it and only done after alot of ppl have tried to get the person to stop, maybe have a fast link to a admin that when one logs on they get a msg about whats going on before they join and reads the logs before hand and decides what to do. well thats just an idea.

Demon brings up a good point, and unless I read wrong about what Rapier suggested, I thought he wanted the high level player to be able to only kick a player if another player was violating any rules, and hence helping the admins. Meaning no other power would be added to the player, and if the player with moderator abilities were to violate his/her post he/she would lose his/her chance of ever becoming moderator again.

ECHO wrote:

Very good point brought up, then perhaps a list should be made as to who would qualify. And as I stated above, people would have only one chance, and if they were to abuse their power, someone else could easily pm an admin, and the admin should have the ability to remove that power from the player. So in other words the admins would designate the moderators(under the approval of owners of course).

Hopefully no one is complaining on this thread, my sole goal is in reassessing these ideas brought up in order to make a friendlier family server.

Now how could a "noob" be the highest level player on? That would mean the player is not really a noob, and would know exactly what he/she is doing. And read what I stated above as possible solutions to deal with these type of situations.

there have been a few times when the highest player on was someone that has not been on the server for long or that no old timers have been on long enough to get a high score to be higher up than the new person!

I feel that the best option for the "Moderator" is for dru/shan to talk amongst the admins and generate a list of the possible candidates for the job and layout a very clear set of rules on how to do the job!

That is really the heart of the issue. They rarely play and don't know the current set of regulars well enough to select new admins.

The sad part is the mechanism is there to kick the offending player(s) but no one wants to use it.

They want someone else to take responsibility for the kicking when in reality, all players have the responsibility to kick a player that violates the rules. I do understand the reluctance of using the kick vote just becasue a player is being snotty/camping/spamming/etc. but all of you have to realize that the "kick vote" mechanism is there to preserve YOUR rights and privileges in playing on this server as well against non-conforming players.

In many ways, you the players, are the true administrators of this server. The slected adminstrator players like Echo, Em, Untamed Sub, Big Daddy, etc. are around for the more "aggressive" actors such as foul language spectators, spammers trying to bring down the server, and those of related actions that we have to catch.

To piggyback off what Demon is saying, sometimes you have to be the "bad guy" and vote to kick the offending player. I had to do it before becoming an admin, and I'm often STILL the bad guy for reprimanding a player that is breaking the rules even though they may not have bad intentions. When I first started playing here, an admin wasn't always online. If someone was breaking the rules and there was no one around to take care of the problem, I recorded their info and reported it through the proper channels. It's not difficult, it just takes some effort. You may not get an instant remedy by attempting a vote kick or by reporting the problem, but at least you're doing your part.

Let's not forget that this is not my server, nor is it yours. Shan and Dru keep this thing running and the administration system is their call. If we need more admins or implement this moderator idea, they are the decision makers.

You can never have too much precision in your soup.

ECHO is right!

now on a few occasions there have been a few "noobs" on and I tried to tell the worst one to calm down on stuff and explain the type of server we have here and I'd get laff'd and then they would try to kick vote me off and it did happen once!

Now if there is some system in place for recording whats going on plz tell me! so I can make sure that the info be passed on to the right channels when this happens!

but I believe the main idea here is for that type of scenario when 1 or 2 regulars are on and new people on and its some new person thats causing this and its their friends thats on also so the vote kick does not work.

there was some one trying to do vote kicks on ppl about 2 weeks ago and he/she was being fairly disruptive and rude in certain ways until they got the idea that we was not going to play into his game plan.

Besides things like a high level player being un-trustworthy, and it being up to Dru and Shan to decide who gets to be an Admin, I wanted to mention something else. If you went to a high-level getting admin rights model, then there are some folks with very high level main characters who have other characters who are very low... and this would break the model. Imagine Demon starting a new player and think about how it would work for him...

And as Demon said... we do have a mechanism (the kick vote), but sometimes, when you end up with a plague of folks ignoring the rules, a DC veteran can be very vulnerable. Every system has its flaws...

<snip>

It's sad.

Dru, Shant, Szlat.. someone... anyone... please do something. Please give some of the folks that have been here for a good length of time now and play on a regular basis some type of admin control to take care of these types of issues. What I'm seeing as a consistent basis now... I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want my child to be a part of.

We have a general rule that people have to be reserved slot contributors twice, have an account in good standing, and be nominated by another current admin.

The fundamental problem is this: The first word we learn as children is NO. From that point forward society teaches women that saying no isn't polite, and society teaches men to respect those who wont take no for an answer.
