Healer: Heal if you can and when you can and hope the one you are healing wearsno rage guns and covers you if a titan pops behind you

Healed: Cover your healer, protect him and STAY STILL! healers depend on you remaining somewhat still to do their job, don't wear ra<ge guns so they can benefit from healing you and cover them ifatitan pops up behind them.

And the gold rule for you all: "have fun" because when you die no matter what skills, guns, level you are, you are still death

I agree whole heartely that it is just a game BB, but that turn and spurn with the comment just rubbed me the wrong way big time. In part, it may be that it comes too close to the way I was treated in HS by the girls, and in part it the fact that it was the rudest anyone has ever treated me in any venue in quite awhile, and one of the rudest comments I have ever seen on DC.

BB, you also ask why I am still playing LA instead of LW... I have actually started a LW player (and will start a medic later), but there are several reasons why I will stick with LA for my main player. They are:

a) I have never been one to go back to an easy path, just because I chose a more difficult one. This is in part why I, while still only 16, was the person in our VFD to do the rock rescues instead of many of our adults. It also showed up in my martial arts as well. And it is why I do OS internals instead of application programming or sysadmin. I like challenges.

b) I definitely would not give up all the XP which I have accumulated since RPG went onto the DC server.

c) I actually like LA more.

But it also does not stop me from seeing the disadvantages. And other folks have as well, even if they have not conciously recognized the fact. For example, how many times have players who have multiple players played their LW character because a given map, etc. was too difficult for their LA player? I know I used to hear that quite a bit, even from DD. Indeed, I cannot even remember when he last played his LA character.

Now, on to 320's reply. While I don't often end up with a healing weapon, like you, if I have one, I will heal folks. Not as well as the medics do, but... And yes, it does bite that the Vamp was chopped so that a +4 vamp weapon is essentially lvl 2 vampirism. (Remember, lvl 2 vampirism already requires 50+ in damage bonus, which would be +25% on damage). But I mentioned that already. As for the vamp weapons...unless it is a weapon I really don't care for (mines), or I have one of my good weapons as that weapon, I will take it if nobody else wants it. But I tend to also let the lower level players have a chance, unless I happen to have a rage weapon.

And thanks for the complement 320. And I am not going to quit over something like this (I may take a day or two off, but not quit), and I am not going to get bogged down in it either. Indeed, if you think I am saying it is bad here, it is not. I have played on servers where there was obvious cheating (like getting consistent one-shot head shots from clear across a map, through a window that you cannot even see when scoped in), and I have played on servers where "baby seal hunt" was not even close. Indeed, when I was working at Bell Labs, two of our lunch/after-work UT99 group played on pro-tour servers, and several others could have cleaned up on those same servers if they had played there...but I played with them most every day for months...and would be playing with them still today if it had not been for the destruction there. Of course, we also played DM, CTF and LMS at work, and the old BEL clan was LMS (and one of those servers where baby seals were extinct), so there were things I could do there which I cannot on DC for folks who got to be abusive or just plain jerks.

BTW...if you have ever seen me jump, turn around and nail a bug, this is where it comes from. Someplace, there is a pic by someone spec'ing where I have done a flip and am firing the ripper, and have just decapitated one of the other players. Cool as all get out, but pure reflex. Now if I could only hear the nali like I could hear folks sneaking up on me in DM or LMS. Or if they would only stop appearing right up beside me while firing

Come on, you guys, its just a game. What's with the "what's in it for me?" vibe I'm getting from a couple of these posts? Some people are more generous than others, that's all there is to it.

I agree what that guy said was rude and he should have just left the mic off, but how hard is it to find another healer? Why let something so trivial bother you?

Spacey, if you think the LA player is really that disadvantaged compared to others, why don't you switch classes?

B_B

Word.

Boingo nailed it. Even before/after I figured out that LW heals = 0 I still heal people, just for the sake of it, to be friendly in the game. They usually have nothing to give me in return, usually low level players. I can't give LA players anything in return for maxing my weap, most of the time, which is why I rarely ask them. Specially since vamp got chopped.

(Vamp +5 and nobody wants it LOL, unheard of a few months ago)

Gets people playing, just being nice and friendly. Some of them have really risen up. The play is so advanced now, I hate to think of people quitting because they got overwhelmed. That's why I started the strat thred and told everybody EVERYTHING that I do. Any player that has better reaction/aim can take that stuff to heart, practice and beat me, I think. I have plenty of tricks, though. I didn't give it ALL away. Not cheats, though. I don't cheat, never will.

Bel, you're a technical player, good player. Just stomp these fools. That's the best way to let them know they're missing out on the greatness.

Seriously, if you get bogged down in it, you'll lose out on the greatest depth of the game.

Lw players may have chosen an easy path but we still have feelings be careful not to dis us. We bleed red when we die just like you and we are just as special as you.

It's true I die a lot more with my LA person but I can EASILY keep up with all the higher ranked players and my LW file at such a low level (look at my sig). LA has the advantage of the artifacts which makes it soooooo much easier IMO, I can survive all 16 waves if I wanted to while having placed 1st-3rd on the score charts even if there was 20 people playing with. People take for granted the Lightning Rod, Electro Magnet, Boots of Flight, and Teleporter which most of the time save my life. LA in my opinion is wayyyyyyyyyy easier at a higher level than LW. By the time I'm level 50 I'll probably be up to par or even greater than my level 90 LW player.

As for the healing thing another thing you might consider is that seeing as you were using a rage it would be pointless to heal you since you're just going to hurt yourself again. I know I've just run past a guy with a Rage with 80 health because that's all he was using and it seems like a waste of time to me to sit there and heal him/her constantly and get nothing.....not even a bug kill.

Totally. I used to think the LA players had it tougher. In a few ways I still do: the leveling up process might be tougher. But once you get to about level 100 - 125, it's a totally different story. Kills = adren = more kills. It all comes down to just one thing: triple damage.

I only read about half-way through your post bel, but there is a VERY strong possibility that was me. ^_^; sorry. Let me explain, though. (maybe someone said something along the lines of what i'm gonna say, but oh well)

When I heal people, I tend to stay there when they lose health as I'm healing them, and heal them until they're at max. Now, if someone's using a rage weapon, I heal them. They shoot something, I heal them some more. etc etc.

Not many decisions; sit there and heal you, and get no kills or exp, or ignore you.

I tend to pass up people with rage weapons, as it seems to waste my time, UNLESS it's between waves, or on a harder wave.

So, yeah. I guess my actions may have been a bit irrational. My apologies.

Hey, not dissing LW, as I started out as LW and have a LW player as well. Indeed, I am grateful to the LW players who toss me the flak on maps like Face and Bifrost, or a sniper/lg on other maps. It helps keep me alive! And if you do it a few times, I get to recognize ya, and depending on where I am sitting at the moment, I might max out a weapon of yours or toss something like the globe your way. All the better to keep you alive so that you might toss something even better my way later on, or nail that nali before it nails me!

Now if I were to dis anything, it would be the RPG itself. Don't get me wrong, as I think Dru has done a great job at keeping things halfway balanced, but I know that any system can always be improved. I also know that sometimes that improvement is extremely costly. Add to this 30+ years of gaming (I started playing D&D a few years after it first was published), my engineering/scientific background, etc., and perhaps I am a bit more sensitive than most to things like imballances and feedback loops.

Tell me Tiger, would you rather that I shoot at that Titan with a puny +3 energy weapon (which only does +6% damage), a vamp weapon (which I might max out to do +17.5%, a +5 weapon (which does +50%) or that rage +10 weapon (which does +100 the damage)??? Please tell me, and be sure to remind me so I know exactly how adverse you are to getting hit by that rock. Mind you, only half of me is joking here.

As for what what Tiger is saying, it is something which needs to be remembered, not only if you have some medic healing you, but also if you have some LA person maxing your weapon, or some LW person handing you a weapon which you really like but they do not use.

More on this in yet another response...

Hey man. If it was, appologies accepted. The main thing was the shock of hearing what I did hear. And I wanted to get everyone thinking about things here. Not all the thoughts in this thread are what I wanted, but hey... I am used to that after 40+ years.

Now, I want to bring up some items about the rage weapon itself. I know some folks might think that the primary reason to use the rage weapon is for the XP, and I would be lying to you if I said that it was not a factor. But think about this... if I wanted more XP for just myself, would I not be better off sticking with a +5 weapon, not handing them out to everyone, and activating the triple as often as I could? The way I view the rage weapons is as a means to help kill as many bugs as possible so that we all survive the wave. I do this at the expense of roughly 75% of my starting health, 80% of my normal max health, and 83% of the health I could have if maxed out by a medic. In doing so, I decrease the chances that I will make it through a wave, and right along with that goes a decreased chance of the kills during that part of the wave, the chances at a spree, etc. And seriously, even a vamp is not going to help out much, given how that weapon has been spayed/nutered (but I certainly would not turn one down either). As a result, it is also very rare that I will kick in the triple, and will tend to use booster to help me beyond what ghost will handle. So, instead of going around with a +5 flak, doing 266 points (142*1.5*1.25) of damage with each shot without the triple and 799 points (142*1.5*3*1.25) with each shot with no real loss in health while my triple holds out, I may opt for the +10 rage and do a more consistent 355 points with no triple, and 1065 if things are really in the crapper and we need to do some massive killing. But again, if I were really just out for myself and the XP, I would stick with that +5 and do the same overall damage (and hence XP) if I lived just 34% longer.

BTW...IMO, I would say that the damage done by a rage weapon, when healed by a medic, should grant XP to that medic, allowing them to essentially share in XP just as those linking into a link gun chain do, etc. But, unfortunately, such does not appear to be the case. So in effect, it is just like when a LA person such as myself gets no XP for maxing out weapons, handing out weapons, or handing out artifacts. And hence, the LA and medic players are far more like the LW player than Dru would like them to be.
