I've been playing UT2k4 with the built-in 32mb video on my intel mobo and I'm getting sick of lowest details @ 640x480... so I'm in the market for a new card. My particular needs:
-I need it to fit my intel D845GBV motherboard with a AGP 4x 1.5V slot (don't know if its AGP 1.0, 2.0, or 3.0, does it matter?)
-Linux support
-Around ~$200, $250 at most
-At least 1024x768 with good detail, good fps
UT2K4 (and maybe tuxracer) is the only 3d-intensive game i'll be running on it

If you want Linux support, I think you may want to stay away from ATi. I'm not totally positive about this, but I think many of their drivers don't work well with Linux. Again, I'm not positive about that. From what I have read, NVidia cards seem to work with Linux well, but again, I'm not positive about that. Even though you don't have an 8X AGP slot, you can still run the newer cards, but just at a slower bus. However, from what I've read also, since you can't run higher then 1.5V, there are some higher up cards that won't work.

I am pretty sure an ATI card would work in Linux but I have olny used nVidia when running linux. You may have to download the linux driver off of the nVidia web site as opposed to the card manufacture (evga, ect...)

I, for one, have always stayed with nvidia. Tried an ati once and the drivers just kept giving me bugs with just about every game I had, had to keep changing lines in the sys files to make the thing work. (admitedly, this was a while ago, so it may be different now.)
I currently have a chaintek g-force 5700le extream edition agp 8x (does run at 4x though) with 256 mb ram. runs everything fine at 1024x768 full on hottie details, etc.. only cost me 170 something at tigerdirect.com (this was bought last christmas, so is prob cheaper now.) Always update the drivers at nvidia.com, the drop down list for os has an option for linux right in it.
Comp specs are as follows:
P4 2.6 ghz
512 ddr pc2100 ram
80 gb 7200 rpm ata 100 hd
soyo dragon mobo p4x400 dap
monitor refresh 120hz (crt 18" screen)
1024x768 res

I'd look into an NVIDIA Geforce card of some type or other. Nvidia has good linux support (using their drivers than you can download from their page) and makes good cards. I'd also probably stay away from ATI cards... seems their linux support isn't up to par.

I'm strongly considering this 6600GT, but there are 6800's (AGP) around the same price; whats the diff between 6800 and 6800GT/LE? I'm willing to shell out $290 for the 6800GT if it'll be able to play UT2K7 at good resolutions... thoughts?

I have a BFG Tech 6800GT OC and the card rocks, I play at 1600X1200 with everything maxed and never have video lag. But like Cham said, if your MOBO has limited bus bandwidth it would be a waste to put that card in your machine.

I'd probably look into the 5600 line. Something with 256meg of video ram will help where you've got a limited 4x bus.
