Since this thread was originally developed, it seems ChatSpam has been mutated to refer mostly to text chat. The other day someone wanted to know how you tell if someone's text spamming - I responded that "If you've got text to voice on, you know it when you hear it."

We've had quite a few chatty people on - and I'm talking people who put *me* to shame, because I *know* I talk too much. I can be a verbal version of the me that posts here! Not only that, I have issues with language sometimes while talking - forget words ...

Honestly, there are times I wonder how close *I'm* getting to getting kicked.

But we've had quite a few younger folks (I'm talking teens or younger) who occasionally do things like find something funny (which in and of itself isn't a crime) but hold down the voice chat button while laughing - a lot. Or folks that hold running conversations during waves 14-16, in spite of multiple requests that they keep it down. I guess this is one of those issues where the admins (God bless ya) have their hands full finding the definition ...

I usually figure out who these people are really quick - and put them on ignore. As for Auto Taunts, what I usually do is give them two text requests: first one that they turn them off the first time I get one; and then when I know they haven't turned them off, if I see them die, I tell them how to turn them off. If they still don't turn them off, I ignore them and don't give them weapons when I have cool stuff.

And sometimes it seems like I attract these people. I try to go out of my way sometimes to help new people, but occasionally I get guys who keep firing off questions directly (often the same one repeatedly, in spite of answers). If I don't put them on ignore, I often at least stop responding.

And I have to apologize - sometimes I get a little flustered with folks who have been around a couple of maps and haven't bothered to hit the web site and read. I should probably put a key sequence in for "All questions answered at http://disastrousconsequences.com/"

I've never gotten the "how do I use the deemer" question though ... only problem with the "aim at floor" reponse is that if they do it, they usually end up killing innocent folk (or me) in the process ...

As far as the muting of other sounds when voice chat's in action, I think this is to deal with potential feedback problems when people aren't using headsets, but are using microphones and speakers. I understand that - so it doesn't bother me so much. The only time I find it a major issue is on the waves where folks tend to die quickly.

Oh, and (IMHO) for the most part, unless you're directly assisting the living, the dead shouldn't talk. Type at most.

well ithink people who type "wwwwwwwwwwwww" usealy do that because they mistakedly typed "t" then when they pres forword (w) it types "wwwwwwwww" then the monsters come and they dont have time to delet it so they press enter. the resalt "wwwwwwwwwwww"

if thats not the case the the people may want to think about killing themself with a rusty knife.

Death's unavoidable, lets have a drink.

Do people find it annoying when players die in some pathetic fashion and types "arrrgg" or something? if so I'll stop.

Also: please don't have long winded conversations about cars, especially not on heavy rounds. I don't understand car-talk, and I don't see how I should be concerned about someone else's car. Few people won slots on my ignore list tonight because it was killing my concentration.

I think the cars make up for their lack of weapons, so be kind to them.

This goes back to my earlier post about how "text spam" is infinitely easier to spot than "voice spam". And the level of politeness on this server sometimes makes it hard for people to say "Shut up" to someone else.

Really, voice chat spamming can come down to a judgement call from an Admin (the sense of deja vu I'm getting tells me I've said this before) ... and if there's not one on, it's a bit more of a problem. Most folks will respond positively to a request to keep it down, particularly on specific waves. If they are chat spamming and don't stop after you ask them to, chances are you'll get the 50% + 1 you need to successfully kickvote them off ... providing the 50% + 1 understand how to do it.

As a general rule, if you're dead (and not directly assisting the living), type. I don't care what's involved in the conversation - type it out, because your voice chat will muffle sounds folks might use to stay alive, and voices also tend to be very distracting to those continuing the struggle against the invaders.

And if you're not sure if you're chatspamming (or think you're definitely not), think for a second:

Are you and another person or two dominating the "air time"?
Are the questions you're answering answered on the FAQ or forums?

If so, then chances are, you are chatspamming.

I know what you're saying ... "But we're talking about game stuff when we do a Q&A!" Thing is, your Q&A is probably stepping on communiques that are slightly more crucial to the game at hand. Have the noob log off and look at either the main FAQ, or point them at my newbie FAQ (which is slightly less relevant than it used to be since Shantara started expanding the main one quite a bit).

I've heard the comment that maybe there should be an FAQ entry that defines chatspamming a little more clearly. Not 100% sure I agree with this; no matter how much you "define" it, someone will always say "they weren't", or will cling to that "definition" as a defense when, in an Admin's judgement, they were chatspamming. Little hint for you: Admins are allowed to make judgements like that. That's one of the things they're there for.

Frankly, if big white letters popped up on my screen (once or four times) and said basically "Shut up," I'd shut up. Even if I were 100% sure they weren't directed at me. "Minimize your target profile" and "don't poke the bear" and all that.

If you're getting a ticket (which I would liken to getting kicked, but not banned - which would be like a liscense suspension), the one thing you don't do is P.O.P.: Piss Off the Police. You want to put chatspamming into a "rule"? Then the last rule that's ever codified is "Don't argue with or anger an admin. They aren't granted admin powers lightly, and trying to go up the admin chain will always be a steep and treacherous climb."

As usual, I'm no admin here and this is all opinion - this post should not be viewed as DC doctrine. If I'm way off base here someone will say something and I will be sufficiently chastised (and will likely edit the post to more closely reflect reality than what I perceived it to be).

Oh, and Neutrophil: I am *so* bad about that. As much as I can manage to keep my finger off of my (remapped obviously) "V" key when I curse, I can't help but hold it down and utter a short "Doh!" or "Ow" when I get squished.

Well said, Bot.

A critical point in Bot's post, is that even if what you're talking about is game related, i.e. answering questions like "How to do this, how to do that, etc.", when it starts turning into a five minute conversation on how to play the game, and no one else can hear game sounds or get a word in edgewise, that's still chat spamming.

Turn music off, turn FX all the way up. Turn down txt to speech a bit. Ignore people when they ignore you on voice. Problem solved.

Perfect, as a player I should be punished for others being obnoxious.

The problem is only truly solved when people obey this rule.

The fundamental problem is this: The first word we learn as children is NO. From that point forward society teaches women that saying no isn't polite, and society teaches men to respect those who wont take no for an answer.
