I have downloaded the DC map files, but they say I need a program to install the maps. Where can I get this program?

What file extension is it? Usually maps (or any files) are in .zip files or .rar files. .zip can be unzipped with windowsXP, and with .rar you need an external program.

http://www.rarlab.com/
for Win rar (get the free one)

http://www.winzip.com/
If you don't have XP and need to open a .zip file

I've also seen maps as .exe's but those don't need a program either.

Good luck!

All I need to do is unrar it and put it in the corresponding folders? I tried doing that, but it still loads the map files from the server on those maps that I already put in the right folders. I heard, not sure where, that you need another external program to actually install those files that you unzip.

Why does it not work?

Ive actually noticed that alot of the maps I have installed still download off DC, I dont know if there have been changes made to those on the DC server or if maybe I have a different release of that map. (a lot of the bonus maps were actually released by mappers and the packs from atari/epic had a different version in the offical pack)

You sure you're putting the .ut2 files into the ..\UT2004\Maps folder? If a map file is in there and it's the same as the one the server has, it should be fine. If you have the map but not the texture packages, etc. I don't know what it'll do. It might crash and give you an error or you'll download the mesh pack.

If you download a map and it ends in .ut2 and you place it in the maps folder that should do it. But if the server makes you download a new one anyway that means the one on the server is different from the one you downloaded from the website link.

Sometimes maps get changed and the name is left the same and sometimes the redirect just has a different version so there are alot of ways it could be happening. Thats why the majority of the time I use a cache grabber to save maps and not download them from sites.

That's kinda strange, because I got the maps I tried off of these forums. I'll try it again.

By the way, there is a way to make it so every time a new file is downloaded from dc server, it goes onto your hard drive so you wouldn't have to download it again?

Anytime a server sends you a file you need, it goes into your cache folder. This is a way of putting it on your hard drive and you won't need to download it again from the server until your cache expires. There is a setting you can change to allow you to specify how long your cache goes until expiring.

If you download a cache grabber all it does it move the file out of cache and into the proper folder and rename it to the proper name. That way it wont ever expire.

Aight, thanks a lot. I'll try it once I get home. Can your cache fill up with DC temporary files that it makes the whole computer lag?

Thanks again.

I edited my UT2004 file.....

C:\UT2004\System\UT2004

Ctl+F type purge and click find next.

In the line:

PurgeCacheDays=30

Change the 30 to 999

PurgeCacheDays=999

The only problem with that method is that any map you download from the server you won't be able to play in instant action if you want. Maps in the cache dont show up on the maplist for instant action.
