So I was installing a new DVD burner last night and my comp just died. I mean died. a couple of times it would get past POST abd start to load Windows but wouldn't finish and hte rest of the time it wouldn't get past detecting the CPU. >insert various curses<

I was ready to take in to the local PC place during lunch. As I was sitting taking calls from people having trouble with thier credit cards, which is very mindnumbing, I had a thought. I had noticed the HD wasn't completely fastened down when I was looking inside the case last night. Hmmm, maybe some slight vibrations had caused the tracking head to make contact with one of the platters. At lunch I go by local PC shop and pick up a new HD (which I really couldn't afford this week). While I was there I asked if he had a battery for my motherboard as the clock was losing time. He said he didn't but Radio Shack carried them. I had to wait until I got of work to get the battery. I eat & watch some tv first to get ready for what I expect is going to be a very long night. I manage to switch out the battery ok and decide just to make sure it is in ok before I change out the HD. I plug it all up & Bingo! it boots up just fine.

All that worrying and it was a $3.49 battery. I just hope Local Computer Store guy isn't too upset when I return the HD tomorrow. Btw, he had about 15 PC's in for repair/upgrade when I was in so I asked him how long it took when someone brought on in to get it back. He said about 2 days. I didn't think that was too bad of a time to get one back in.

Wow, I didn't know Radio Shack still carried CMOS batteries. My dad regales me with stories of the 'good ol' Radio Shack he used to know when he works for tandy... now it's just cell phones and Compaqs. Good to know they still have some useful stuff.

Glad you are back up and running!

Those are not just CMOS batteries. Those same disk batteries (though sometimes a different "model") are used in calculators, those fancy ear thermometers, some cameras, some remotes, and countless other devices where power demands are relatively low. Indeed, almost every single time I have needed such a battery, I have been able to find it at either my local grocery store or drug store. If they sell batteries for hearing aids, they almost certainly sell the larger batteries used in your PC.
