Pushing (shieldgunning) someone off to take a tripple (or any other arti) is as rude as firing the deemer at your feet to nuke other players. Other than that, it is probably by accident or out of n00b-ness.
Until recently I didn't know about the "squatting" thing and I would pick up stuff because I figured the other player was just having trouble and it would go to waste... oh well. From now on, if I see anyone squatting the Boots of Flight, I will stay clear

Well I will throw my 2 cents in. Artifacts are fair game, period! If there is a conflict between me and another over an artifact I will almost always give it up. I do this because this is a GAME, a GAME that I enjoy playing. There is nothing in this GAME that I need or would do to intentional upset another player. This is supposed to be fun and relaxing, take a deep breath and just play the GAME. By the way, don't get between me and that TRIPLE !!!!!! Thay last remark was an attempt at humour .

I've never had a problem picking up artifacts with my medic character (TON80_MD). If I run over a Triple I pick it up immediately. What's all this about having to squat?
And more on topic, If I pinch a triple, I'll gladly toss it back if asked nicely.

Do you have any monster summoning skills?
If not, that's why you don't have a problem.
There is currently a limit of 3 artifacts in your inventory. However, this limit can be bypassed in two ways:
1. Dru codes it so you start with extra artifacts.
2. You either have an artifact tossed directly at you, or you stand/squat over one, and you'll be able to pick it up as it's about to disappear (technically, this is a bug).

That's why - you only have your medic weapon maker, and not a bunch of summoning artifacts (you start with two). So you don't have 3 artifacts, just the one - leaving you with two open artifact slots.
When you're ready to apply some thought to your Medic, you might want to read up: So you want to be a Medic/Monster Master?
