Some stuff are worse than anything we can think of, and its hapenning right now...

I dont know why google is providing this web page when they actually support such atrocities.

actually what is on the google site is a little misleading. the bill has a lot of loopholes that could allow companies to charge each other enormous amounts of money (which you or I would pay) and then give each other discounts at the end of the year.

I dont know why google is providing this web page when they actually support such atrocities.

I don't like it but I do not know if I would say tis an atrocity.

I agree, spend the few minutes in support of our Freedom

Well Google had to choose over the money it would get from China or blocking some content. I don't like it, but those are the kind of decisions businesses make

I already followed up on the Net Neutrality. To mention about what has happened to China, it's totally messed up and there are people trying to do whatever they can to help.

There are commercials running here (Washington, DC) that literally reverse the situation. They blame Google almost exclusively for "stifling innovation on the Internet" and ..."just as Americans were to save millions on their cable bills, along comes Google to blow the whole thing up." with a picture of a smoking TV in front of a very surprised aged couple.

They give no reason for exactly how their version is correct, just a sequence of fairly random but striking images. Exactly the kind of thing politicians wnt to see.

They make me want to scream bloody murder and break something.

This isn't entirely accurate, and I think it needs to be addressed. The Chinese government blocks content on the web that the dont feel is "fit" for their citizens.

Google decided that it would be better to offer what search services they could in China. They allow the Chinese gov to filter the results because the Chinese government is going to filter them anyway.

I think in Google's shooes, I'd have made a similar decision, because some internet is better at enabling a population to learn more than no internet.

This isn't to say I agree that the internet should be filtered. I don't. This is to say that I think Google made the best decision they could under the circumstances.

The fundamental problem is this: The first word we learn as children is NO. From that point forward society teaches women that saying no isn't polite, and society teaches men to respect those who wont take no for an answer.

As for the "Net Neutrality" I honestly believe this is one of the most troubling things to happen in our time.

Corporations which may or may not hold monopolies want to charge the service providers for the content they serve, or they may decide to simply not deliver it.

They think it sounds pretty reasonable, since they do transport the content.

The problem is multifold. The larger problem is that this will push smaller organizations (like DisastrousConsequences.com) out of the Internet. Only large corporations with large amounts of money will be able to afford this "protection."

Each of us already pays for an Internet up-link individually, and also each service provider pays an already fairly hefty amount for a bigger up-link.

Right now, in this day and age, any single person reading this message can actually set up their own Internet service, company, forum, game server, email server, blog, chat server, picture server, etc...

If there is no net neutrality large corporations who run the foundation backbone of the Internet, will be allowed to charge these content "protection" fees.

If that is the case, I believe that the fairly free Internet we all know today will cease to exist inside the US (and potentially outside as well). Instead of it being a very open and peer like network, it will be very tiered. You will get most if not all your content from large corporations.

I believe we live in a world where our other forms of media have largely abandoned us. For example, watch your local news tonight and see how many times they show you doom and gloom as compared to something happy. Next count the number of pharmaceutical commercials during the breaks.

On the Internet today, we each individually have access to the knowledge of nearly the entire planet. Each post someone has made, each entry in wikipedia, each news article on Google news, each time someone bloggs about their life experiences, all that wealth of information is stored in a freely accessible format, usually for a long period of time. Using search tools, like Google, we can quickly reference more knowledge than at any previous time in the history of the world. If we don't understand something, most of the time the knowledge is out there on the Internet just waiting for us to look it up.

My belief is that if the Internet backbone providers can control that content, that vine of knowledge will wither and die, either because it doesn't support the political viewpoints of the company transporting the information, or, far more likely, because the person who would like to share the knowledge with the world can simply no longer financially afford to share. The Internet we have today is quite simply the only forum in which people can express their views of life largely without fear of harm or reprisal.

In closing, I'd like to express that I feel that the Internet is the last, best hope for humans everywhere. It is the only place where you can learn unimpeded, and no one but you chooses what you learn about. It is the only forum that you can freely learn about other cultures, other places, other times, and most importantly, learn about the human experience in ourselves.

If large companies are allowed to control the pipelines that give us the information through the internet. We might as well as say goodbye to internet sites like Disastrous Consequences. The Tier 1 and Tier 2 service is not something that should be allowed. It's pure and simple discrimination based upon who is going to pay the most money to get to sites easier and quicker. This is a bunch of bs that companies are going to be allowed to charge other sites so people can access their service. The internet is a free and open community of people. We shouldnt have to be split up and seperated because of how much money your willing to cough up to access Tier 1 service. I hope and pray that Net Neutrality passes in the US and worldwide.

I think that one of the main problems with this is that the people in the U.S. Congress who are in charge of regulating things like this don't have the slightest clue as to what they're talking about.

Then again, it is likely that they are being influenced and controlled by the aforementioned large companies.

In the U.S. who has the power?

Is it the government?
Is it the people?

No. Out of everything and everyone in the U.S., the demographic (sp?) that has the most influence and control over just about everything are the big companies.

I'm sorry to say this, but it seems to me that this might very well be a losing fight.
I would send a letter to someone in Congress, but since I live in Canada, I doubt that adding my 2 cents to this would have any affect.

I would have to agree. Too often, they have to make rules about something in which they are totally clueless. Or worse, they do make rules about something to make someone happy without fully thinking out the consequences. The past few months, my family has been running afoul of one of the newest rules, that regarding the purchase of pseudophed. Because it is a component used to make meth, folks complained and congress passed a law which limits the sale of products containing pseudophed, such as Claritin-D. In doing so, they said that you cannot purchase more than a certain amount in a single purchase, and that you cannot purchase more than 9 grams in a 30 day period. However, I can tell you that Congress cannot even do basic math. Our doctor has both my wife and myself on Claritin-D (the insurance companies will not pay for prescription versions now that a non-prescription version is available), taking it every day. If you do the math, a 30 day supply would be 9.6 grams. Worse, the law prohibits stores from selling us the amount necessary for both of us, and heaven help you if you end up with any children on it, as you have to buy it yourself.

Honestly, instead of responding to this post, if you feel strongly about this topic, and I hope that many of you do, follow this link:

http://savetheinternet.com/=senatemap

and encourage your local Senators and Representatives to support Net Neutrality!
