Eh, I'm not a fan of the dots growing based on health. Having them all the same size would be fine and awareness already takes care of the health portion.

I too think that too many icons are causing clutter. I'm beginning to regret mentioning making medics crosses - it was going to be fairly subtle (but noticeable) being the same color (and fairly symmetrical around all four axis) and I don't really see the need for having any of the other classes as different icons.

That screenshot ... ick.

Eh I think the radar looks cool bot. Espically if you make all the monster dots the same size. I cant really see it being called cluttered as before you would just have a bunch of dots in the same place instead of icons. Maybe you think its cluttered since the titan dots are so big and taking up quite a bit of space.

I also think it wont be hard for new players to learn what everything means since basicly the icons are the same on the scoreboard and are pretty much self explanitority based on what the classes say in the ability list. The only weird one is the classless player and the constructions. You could darken and fade constructions a bit more though so the edge fading for classless players really wont affect it. I still have mixed feelings about blocks though.

The Hatter: Why should it? Does your watch tell you what year it is?
Alice: Of course not, but that's because it stays the same year for such a long time together.
The Hatter: …which is just the case with mine.

I was originally concerned about clutter, but I think I like the radar with all class icons.
Many times I am looking for an AM to give dren to, or looking for other engineers to work with so I can see the benefit with having all classes.
Plus It makes it easier to just glance at the radar and see where all of the players are.
I think having better awareness of where your teammates are would help promote team play.

I think I could handle the size representing the health. Since the health is usually representative to monster size, this would give a more radar like operation. (Radars in real life can't report health.) Plus the colors take away from the awareness ability.

I like the fading out of the more distant dots.

For those that don't like the distraction or size, Szlat, can you make a keybind that lets you cycle between different radars, or scale the dots to be larger or smaller?

I'm not a fan of dots getting bigger based on the health of monsters, how about keeping the size the same for all of them? And if I'm not mistaken, isn't it true the dots on radar change depending on the relative health of the player? is that going to change as well? I'd like that feature to stay.

Awareness, well, you're right dracos. Although I played once in another server and bought that skill. Let me tell you it was horrible; bars everywhere and so distracting. I'll never buy that skill for my classes, it's better if you look at the radar and keep in mind if low lvl players are still alive, that way you have an idea how hard the monsters can get.

I like the concept of "fading out" of dots as monsters get farther away from you and the larger range of the radar.

Paradox the translation of clutter in Spanish is : abarrotar
here's the link to the "Bible of the Spanish language"

In this case it's the 3rd one down.

my 2 cents: all dots same size, all classes, classless a blue dot like standard, enemy dots colored based on base health, blocks cyan

Well, thanks for all the feedback. And a mixed bag of feedback it is. Some want the new class symbols for players, some don't.
Some like the monster dots growing in size, lots don't.
Some like the monster color being referenced to player health, some don't.
Some like the radar fading towards the edge, some don't.
Some like lots of information, others want it simple.

I cannot create a radar that will satisfy everyone. Even if I was to investigate having a keyswitch to change radars, I do not know how many variants would be needed.

I do not want to change things just for the sake of it. Plus Druid wouldn't allow it. And since the original radar was written by Druid, I am proposing to only make the changes that I think everyone will agree with.

So, I am proposing the radar stops as it currently is in 216, with the following changes:
  • Pets. Currently they have big dots (probably so the dot for the emitter hides the monster dot). I can change this so the dot can be the same size as the other dots
  • Blocks are currently shown in blue. This is very distracting for medics. I propose to draw them in grey - the same as vehicles, turrets etc

Things not being done - well everything else. But just to make sure everyone understands:
  • Monsters staying as now. Dots not changing size. Dot changes color as now based on a comparison between the monsters current health and the players current health.
  • Players will all continue to be displayed as blue dots
  • Dots currently fade as they go from the centre of the radar to the edge. Items outside the radar range are not shown. This is not changing.

So, basically keeping it simple. Although I think some of the ideas could have been useful (showing player classes, showing out of range items, not fading towards the edge, showing monsters according to original health), I am not convinced it is in the best interests of the DC community to force a change upon people. Bugs fixes are one thing, UI changes a lot more subjective. And I wouldn't want anyone to leave just because the radar changed. I know people will not leave if the radar doesn't change. But sorry for any disappointment it may cause.

So, lots of useful ideas and discussion, but I think keep it simple. And I'll throw away all the test code I generated. (Unless of course Druid or Shantara step in and say do it this way)

(For clarification - this post is about the radar. I am still going ahead with the classes and xp in the scoreboard)

why don't you make a poll and give an idea and say yea or neigh on each part. I mean for instance. I would prefer that the dots were all the same size but I wouldn't be broken up about it if they still had the growing circles. so have 5 choices on each: yes, prefer yes but can go no, apathy, prefer no but can go yes, and no. if the numbers come back 3,4,2,5,1 then it would go yes because thats 12 people who would be cool with the change and only 1 person who really didn't like it.
