OTHER COOLING CONCEPTS:

There are some types of cooling out there, with some of them very exotic. Flak just mentioned earlier about one of the thought processes of keeping the whole motherboard in non-conductive oil.

There is a case out by Thermaltake that uses refrigerated cooling. Some of the more known manufacturers has sets on the market for dual phase cooling, peltier cooling, liquid nitrogen, dry ice, and so on.

Eventually, we will most likely has some combination of refrigerated/peltier cooling sets for mainstream consumers. Dry ice and liquid nitrogen are mainly used for setting 3DMark scores and fall way short of being able to use the concept in everyday computing.

For beginners and those who don't want to go thru the hassle of matching up components for your pc, you most likely will use one of the "low cost liquid cooling aka LCLC" sets from Corsair or Asetek. These sets are sealed and basically consists of the water block, tubes, radiator, pump, reservoir, and fan in one package.

There are sets out there that have the same concept as the LCLC, but have more parts to them, usually with a peltier/cold plate setup.

Then you have those folks that build their own liquid cooling system from available market parts. This way, they can build their cooling system the way they want it and with the colors they want.

For the most part, if the liquid cooling system is done correctly, you shouold be about 5 or so degrees cooler than air-cooled systems during computer idle time. As the usage of the pc rises, the difference between the two systems will continue to spread apart in the amount of heat being retained by the processor, with the liquid cooled processor being a good 20+ degrees cooler than air.

One last thing about liquid cooling. Please, please do not ever use tap water in your system. That is a good way to ruin a computer. You have numerous choices in the selection of coolants, from distilled water and additives to custom made solutions.

I wouldn't go any further than liquid cooling for 2 reasons.

1) Price. Liquid cooling has become more mainstream over the past few years and had become more affordable. More exotic cooling like phase change (same concept as how your freezer works to make it cold) is still on the spendy side.

2) Condensation. Standard water cooling radiator wont cool down any further than the ambient air temp. Phase change brings the temp down below freezing. Doing this causes condensation (ice buildup) on the blocks. When you turn off the system, that ice melts and drips on anything below the proc. Sparks=Bad

Now... things may have changed since I have been out of the biz. They may have made improvements on the phase change cooling designs to eliminate the condensation, and hence, made it safer. Your own research will have to uncover that answer.

Thermaltake's case runs better than $600.00..............and most of the phase change cooling systems have eliminated the condensation problem but do your research.
