Well, the new quad core box is up and running fine. It's amazing how fast it is compared to the P4. Of course now that the money is spent, my wife wins an i7 in a raffle.

Which I7?

Isn't that how it always is... But, I guess we could only be so lucky. Wife still runs an old AMD something that is slower than snot. Hers will be the first thing I upgrade when I get the chance. Hope it's soon.

It's the Core i7 870. Looks like I'll be dropping another $200 on a motherboard.

Nice. plan on dropping more than just for a new motherboard

ok, back to the topic at hand

LIQUID COOLING

At the beginning, liquid cooling components were made from automotive parts, i.e. a car's heater coil/radiator, tubing was clear garden variety aquarium hoses, and the pumps were usually from the aquarium as well. The heat sink was crudely made to fit on the processor.

The same concept is still valid today, that is, a liquid cooling setup will have the same components like a car--a radiator and fan(s) to cool the liquid, a pump to move the coolant, hoses to route the coolant, a reservoir to store the coolant, and heat sink(s) for the processor and cards.

Now you have threel choices, depending on your preferences.

First is the integrated liquid cooling. As it implies, the liquid cooling is embedded in the case, either by the case design or by case modding. Most of the embedded systems use some form of case modding.

Next, you have the internal cooling system. This setup usually places the reservoir and pump at the bottom of the case, routing the hoses as you will for the heat sink/cards and then on to the radiator.

Third are the external cooling systems. As implied, most of the system components are outside the case, either totally separate from the case or attached to the back of the case.

Aslo, you have the single loop, dual loop, and multiple loop systems. All this means is hose the hoses are arranged to create the ability to cool not only the processor but also other pc components such as video cards, north and south bridges, RAM, etc.

The loops are designed to place cool liquids where they are needed. A single loop is usually designed to cool the processor only. Some may quibble but the loop will be:

reservoir to pump to processor to radiator and back to reservoir.

Dual loop:

reservoir to pump to "Y" connector, then one hose to the processor and the other hose to the graphics card to both hoses connecting to another "Y" connector to radiator to reservoir.

Multi-loop is just a variation of the dual loop in which there are more than two "Y" connectors, cooling the processor, multiple graphic cards, and the North/South bridges.

The idea behind the dual/multiple loops is to keep heated coolant from trying to cool another component.

I have probably said this B4, but... I always wanted someone to try some mineral oil or other non-conductive oil for cooling, rather than the standard water + additive or other coolants. This way if there is a spill, there isn't any sparks. Sparks = bad. I just don't know how well it flows compared to the standard fare ( i.e. will the pump strain under a thicker fluid).

(For those who missed it the first few times....)
Now, taking this to this extreme is a bit...well, extreme...bit it still has a major coolness factor.

Question time yet again. I'm hoping this goes in this thread due to I might be adding some stuff to the computer I have. So I have a Dell Dim 4600 with the Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.80 GHz 2.79 GHz, 1.25GB of ram. Is it possible for me to get a new intel Core3-7 processor and insert it along with the Nvidia 9800 GT into the computer I have now? Then if I did that would I need to back up all the files I have so I don't lose any or will I be fine since it's just the processor? So with those questions asked I have one last one. Will those two changes make my computer faster without building a new one or buying a new?

Can take the cold, can take the heat, and can't be beat.

Nope, wont work. The poc sockets are not the same and the chipset is not compatible with the new Cor I3 -7s (along with voltage and memory requirements)
And buying a new mobo may not work either as your case may not be industry standard in it's mounting and layout. Maybe, but usually the big name makers are proprietary in their designs. Now they may have gotten away from that, but it wasn't that way for...well....ever.
May have to do some searching to see if you can place a new mobo of any brand you wish into that case. Oh, and they sometimes liked making the PSU plugs proprietary as well, so you only could use their mobo with that PSU. But like I said, I haven't been in the biz for a while so I don't know if they have gotten away from such practices.

flak is right cpu wont plug in! now the old cases where sert to only thier stuff fit then people complained and then they changed but I've noticed them going back to their old ways again! but if you can add more memory that will increase your speed! But if you can as the start of this thread states buy parts as you can afford them the drives will work in a new case and with a new motherboard to a certain point...tip buy a board that xan do a better chip than the one you can afford then you can do a upgrade to faster chip later!
