Being a music buff, I was thinking about cover songs throughout the years which, for various reasons, are better than the originals.

One of the best (and most agreed upon) examples is Jimi Hendrix's cover of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower". No explanation required on that one. Not to mention that it is a legend covering another legend.

Another example is Metallica's cover of Thin Lizzy's "Whiskey in the Jar". I'd wager that most people have never even heard the original version. Let me just say, ugh. It's almost painful to listen to.

So let's hear some of your examples. Offer an explanation of why you feel it is better if you want to.

Alice and the Hatter: Quotes: Alice in Wonderland
Alice: What a funny watch! It tells the day of the month, and it doesn't tell what o'clock it is!
The Hatter: Why should it? Does your watch tell you what year it is?
Alice: Of course not, but that's because it stays the same year for such a long time together.
The Hatter: …which is just the case with mine.

Jars of Clay did a really cool version of "Wonderful Christmastime". It's very serene with a tinge of sadness. I can't stand Paul McCartney's version... too funky for me.

On the other hand, the absolute worst I've ever heard is Mandy Moore's cover of Umbrella. Rihanna's version is catchy and there's nothing wrong with it, but that didn't stop Mandy Moore from turning it into garbage.

Type O Negative's cover of Baby, One More Time (Brittany Spears).

Epic.

That is all.

Stephen: Stephen is my name. I'm the most wanted man on my island, except I'm not on my island, of course. More's the pity.
Hamish: "Your island"? You mean Ireland?
Stephen: Yeah. It's mine.
Hamish: You're a madman.
Stephen: I've come to the right place then!

I really liked Disturbed's cover of Genesis' Land of Confusion.

I recently heard Seether's cover of 'Carless Whisper.' It was well done, but it kept reminding me of George Michael. I was afraid I was going to hear a cover of 'It's raining men' next.

I like Metallica's version of Turn the Page better than Bob Seger's. Bob's was just too slow for me once I heard Metallica.

As much as I loathe Beatles' covers, I have to admit I enjoy Siouxsie and the Banshee's version of Dear Prudence. But I still like the original just as much.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body. But rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO what a ride!"

A few others I really enjoy:

Send Me An Angel by The Dreaming (Original from Real Life)
A bit of an emo/goth take on the song, really dig it. The Dreaming was formed and fronted by Stabbing Westward's lead singer after that band broke up.

Cars by Fear Factory featuring Gary Numan (Original by Gary Numan)
A bit heavier than the original, but very well done. Also awesome that the brought Gary in to do some of the vocals for it!

Shout 2000 by Disturbed (Original by Tears for Fears)
A great metal version of a great song! However, if you don't like Disturbed's sound, this probably wont work for you...

Immigrant Song by Demons & Wizards (Original by Led Zepplin)
A metal version of an epic rock song! Very very well done, quite similar to the original, just add a little rage!

Anyway, thats all for now...

cheers.

I'm gonna add What Hurts The Most by Cascada to the list. Rascal Flats' version is kinda depressing. Fix: put the song to a dance beat!
