I have had a 360 for a couple of months now, so I may as well compare them. Post if you have any questions.

Cost: I have done a great deal of research on this one. It depends on what you want out of a console. Up front, the PS3 has a higher cost, even with the recent price reduction, the PS3 leads the pack in initial outlay of dough. This is offset by the fact that a little more is included, if you will use the little more, then it is more cost effective. What I am talking about here is the wireless and ability to plug in other USB peripherals or use wireless components. If you will be adding a wireless module and bluetooth or USB headset, the X-BOX 360 is the same price.
WIN X-BOX 360

Graphics: To test graphics I used a 42in Samsung plazma tv set to 1080i resolution. To try to see the maximum difference between the abilities of the consoles and not game developers, we only used crossover games to look at the visuals. Both machines are darn impressive. After a 4 hour debate with the judges we end with a stalemate. It looks like "games developed for a particular console, look better on that console" (I could not personally see the difference)
WIN: TIE

Online: X-BOX 360 wins this one folks, the sheer content wins out. A note: PS3 comes with an internet browser, which the 360 does not. PS3 also has free online content without a subscription cost to get online. X-BoX live is at least 6 months to a year ahead of the PS3 at this point.
WIN:X-BOX360

Compatibility: It seems that Microsoft does not play well with others. PS3 interestingly enough uses your computers windows media player to serve content. It also works with any USB keyboard, mouse, printer, headset, memory stick, Bluetooth, keyboard, mouse, headset. Also works with networked printers. Now why would I want to print something from my TV?
I have no idea!?!
PS3 also works with standard hard drives, upgrade does require a small amount of skill, it is not as easy as removing a module from the side/top and snapping a new one in. PS3 even comes with the option of installing your own operating system (Linux anyone?).
WINS3

Games: We had a long argument over this one. If you only want to include "next gen" games then it looks like there is far more content for the X-BOX360. As far as exclusive games, its a close call, several developers have recently announced previous exclusive games will release for the other console after the initial franchise launch. If you have a library of PS2 games, or are still interested in PS2 franchise games, then the PS3 is your obvious choice.
WIN:X-BOX 360 (next gen) PS3 (Volume)

Controls: I have been overruled by the judgment panel on this one guys. I will keep this short. The majority like the X-BOX 360 controls.
WIN: X-BOX 360

Noise: The PS3 has a small amount of noise when it comes from standby, the muted sound of a hard drive turning up, little or no real "whine". The X-BOX 360 sounds like a miniature jumbo jet about to take off when you turn it on. The DVD drive is loud, the fans scream the hard drive chugs and whines. I have had to turn the TV up while playing games to drown out the player!
WIN: PS3

I'm going to wrap this up for now, if any of you out there are interested in making a purchase and have a specific question let me know and I will try to address it.

Yip...
soo so far..360 -->4 PS3-->2 and 1 tie....

Heres another thought...If your halo fan ...(such as I ) It exclusively for 360 when 3 comes out.........

If I was made of money (which due im not....never had a job..) Id buy the PS3 just for the net browsing capability, for things such as watching online videos, movies, etc...(I watcha bit of tv shows online...) ..And in theory (im just saying in theory ) you may be bale to install one of those tvplayer things that connects to live tv for free....

As for me...If I had the money ..Id go 360 and halo 3...all the way........(I also pref their controllers for games....which is why when i Couldnt find an appropriate xbox controller aside form 360 one for pc..i just didnt buy one..)

But yes...Id go for 360...

We have re-debated the the games section. It looks like we were using a pretty loose definition of "next-generation" for the x-box360, and a pretty tight one for the ps3. It seems that a number of us were using different benchmarks to rate a game as "advanced" or last gen.

Many games originally written for last gen hardware have apeared on "next generation" list we were compiling between the systems.

We have not been able to get a consensus as to what "next generation" is If any of you have an opinion, go ahead and weigh in on this.

We have looked at such indicators as resolution that the game plays at, number of people that a server can support. Hardware requirements. ETC.

How about the complexity of a game's AI?...Interactivity of non related game items..(like exploding barrels or stuff..)
A large variety of actions possible ?
*Cough* like halo 2 being able to hijack climb on to melee, progressive break down of vehicles, and different type of respsonses for diff things liek accidently stick you own solider...vs...halo 1..*cough*....

Yeah I know its not much nx gen..but more so that super mario...not to diss the original....

Did you factor in the cost of an HD-DVD drive? The PS3 comes with an internal bluray drive, you have to buy a clunky external drive for the xbox to play HD movies (and games when/if they decide to release in that format). That alone is enough to make me want to buy a PS3... but alas, I went over to the Wii side

We figured the HD-dvd v.s. blu-ray into the cost factor. If one of your major concerns is ability to watch next gen type content then the PS3 starts to become a lot more economical in terms of overall cost.

If you were to buy the X-box 360 with upgraded hard drive, wireless module and the hd-dvd drive at this point you are paying as much or more than an equivalent ps3.

Then if you take into account that blu-ray is winning the format war at the moment you have a pretty solid deal. There has also been an offer available with the PS3 from the beginning for 5 blu-ray movies with your ps3 purchase.

the offset is that with the x-box 360 if one of those components goes down you can just go get another one but if an integral part of the ps3 breaks you have to send it back to the company.

Another thing that we have not discussed as a group yet is the reliability. X-box 360's have a higher failure rate than the PS3. This is offset by Microsoft's offering a 3 year warranty, even on earlier purchased systems. Sony's warranty is not nearly as comprehensive but it seems that their failure rate is reported at less than one percent, where as Microsoft's is hovering around 1.2%.

It is kind of a gamble as far as I can see if you don't have some kind of product protection on a luxury purchase like one of these consoles. if you have to purchase it after market from a store, you might as well add it to the cost.

The other thing that Sony may be doing is basically turning the PS3 into the equivalent of the Apple TV (I think that is what it is called). Basically, you can download movies or TV shows onto your PS3 and watch them at any time. I read it in a newspaper article where the Sony chairman or president made some public announcement about it. They are trying to compete against Apple. Sony bombed on competing with the iPod, so this is their next gamble.

On the original subject, I have a PS3, but I don't have much of an opinion on its gaming capabilities. I only have one PS3 game, but I do have some blu-ray movies. It plays movies great and I like the BT remote. As was said earlier, it is pretty quiet.

Apple TV?!? Where was I when this happened..o.0...last thing I heard was Iphone..
btw it is of my opinion that regular TV is getting outdated.....I say this Cus I do watch Tv on the computer..AND there are hook ups to where you can hook up ur comp to your tv..(or just get PS3..either works rlly....)

So Im voting for streaming / internet Tv..the wave of the future.. (providing your have fast internet...not that mine is..:/...I just load the streams in advance ..)

Well my take on the whole thing is more based on the gaming aspect. I owned an original playstation and the playstation2 so when it came time for next gen I was looking towards the PS3. However, waiting after the holiday rush I got to see both first hand and view the game library. I actually went against my original thought and bought a 360. This was due to a few reasons, first was the online gaming community which is huge, the second was that a lot of Sony only games were coming out to the 360 as well so xbox wasn't lacking for games. I've owned my 360 for about 4 months and I love it, it's a great machine and allows for easy accessibility between friends.

However, on the other side Sony I believe has the movie situation over the xbox. The blueray may or may not win, but it's still cheaper than the 360 with the add on. But since I am almost solely based on games I went for the xbox. I kind of think of the PS3 as a souped up PSP... it has all of those features like web browsing, videos, music, and games... but it is expensive and in my opinion lacks the games right now. (But that won't be for too much longer).

So in conclusion, I loved sony's previous consoles, but I couldn't be happier with the 360.

I remember when Microsoft announced the original Xbox and I was thinking to myself, this console is more like a PC in my living room! Why the heck would I want something that complicated?!
I kind of miss the days when console gaming was simple. The SNES and N64 didn't have internet capability or a music player. Just good clean fun. I can say that my experience with the Wii has been pretty good, just one software update that made my system act kinda funky... which I guess is a whole lot better than the failing Xbox 360's, but still a little annoying. Is the capability of watching youtube videos on your console cool? Sure, but so not necessary... lol

Aaah but some Tv shows are uploaded on to some streamsites....

But yeah Nintendo days were fun..like the 64......how to move. 1 analog stick......buttons...to do stuff..like in mario..a b and z....(c and L and r were usually camera..) ..

Now....you run through a game lets say..Halo..(cus i jus love that game..)...youve got one stick for view one for movement..and about 8 buttons?..(y x a b L R and L stick and R stick..)...providing its not a big increase in button number but in usage..o.0...

I wouldn't mind seeing what the Xbox 360 is like. I've never seen one before except in a store, but I didn't look at the display game they would have going. I haven't heard anyone say anything bad about it, however. I was never really into gaming consols. Before I got the PS3, the last gaming console I had was the original Nintendo. I don't mean the 64, I'm talking back in the 80's when they had those great big grey cartridges in the plastic black sleaves. I only got the PS3 because it was cheaper then the stand alone Sony blu-ray player. I got one PS3 game because I wanted to see what it looked like. One thing I want to know is; how do you all play games on those clunky controllers?

I play better on controllers than I do PC...why?....I hit the worng buttons on the darn keybaord!!..

(very hard to run when u perss team chat and keep typing wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwdddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd" over and over....) Also If its 1st person shooter game...I inverse the analog.....makes it much easier...though it takes me a couple mins to reacquaint myself..o.0..
Aside from that..when in doubt..button smash....jk....

I like how they both went wirless now..though that CAN be bad..seeing you mite run out of batteries at bad moments....:
"Last check point b4 the end fo the game..almost there..enemies behind me..almost...the--wait...why have i stopped running..o.0..noo..!! ruun !! low batteries?!..noooooooooo"-_-*...

The prob currently with 360 is the red ring of death..( why does MS get all these colour errors of death?..blue screen of death..red circle of death?..cant they just have coloursless death?.....)

Well off to school with me....

There are several ways to play those old games again, There are rental sites that let you play them on your computer, there are emulators for the newer systems or game packages for the more popular ones.

let me tell you, I will never be the master of defender that I used to be.

I play, I did not say anything about play well! The frag effects controller is a mouse and "keyboard" combination that works for gaming more accurately on the PS3

Is that this thing here?
http://gear.ign.com/articles/799/799262p1.html I could probably play on that. Kinda expensive, but it might work.
