I already have the roms of my favorite old school games, but it's not quite the same as playing on the TV. Plus my gaming controller for the computer is more Playstation-like than Nintendo. The Wii's game store is enough for me, I would go crazy with all the clutter of simultaneously owning all of my old consoles.

One other benchmark to add to the list imho would be ease of modding. I have a softmodded firstgen xbox and it's used almost as much as our computers, as a media center, as well as a classic emulator station (Genesis, master system, SNES, N64, dreamcast, etc...). I haven't looked into 360 modding recently but it seems like they were near breaking into it a few weeks after the system came out. As for PS2, I know you can do a bit to it as well but nowhere near as much as can be done to the xbox. In any case, I'd say that benchmark determines lasting value long after the system is 'obsolete'.

Either way I'm gonna dump the moneys back into the ol PC world so I can get UT3 and Need for Speed Pro Street goin full bore.

cheers.

I'd have to say the 360 is a good choice. I mean, the PS3 looks nice, but it's price is crazy. Plus there aren't many games out for it. The 360 however has good graphics as well and has a lot of games out, plus it's more affordable. And I'm not just saying this because I'm looking forward to their mix of the last two FEAR games into one and their cross system game play online.
But, like Wombat, I'll stick to my PC. After all, I wants me Crysis and UT3!

Furry and proud of it!

Just depends on what your looking for. I got the PS3, but basically for playing blu-ray movies. I'm not really into games all that much, so it didn't bother me that there aren't that many games out for it. I have played a few, but only bought one game for it and I've had it for almost a year now. I did try out playing online once and it seemed to work well, though it was only for about five minutes (that's the extent of my attention span). It plays blu-ray movies just as well as a stand alone player and it is a lot cheaper.

Monetarily with the latest price cuts, the PS3 is the cheapest if you want to use either console with your home network (wireless) or Hi-def movies.

I have looked into MODs and hacks for both systems, Many of the PS2 hacks work on the PS3's that have the emotion engine (ps2 emulator). also note, SONY allows the installation of operating systems other than the one that comes with the console.

Most of the hacks that I have seen for the x-box 360 have to do with taking it apart to use the components in other projects, such as the hack where you can use the HD DVD drive in your computer.

the thing that I like the most about any of them is the functionality that I get out of my PSP when linked to my PS3 that is subscribing to my computers media server. It effectively turns my PSP into a portable that can play movies and music, pictures or serve up PDF docs from my hard drives, and at this point I have quite a bit of content.

OK, so both systems have been around for some time. And the prices have dropped considerably, especially, pre owned. I think the 360 is the way to go, but I'd like to hear arguments for the PS3.

I am most interested in FPS, RPG's and Rock Band. But stuff for the little ones (3 & 7) is a second concern.

BTW, how important is HDD size?

I own both systems now and they are both excellent choices, but for completely different reasons. The perfect system would be the PS3 hardware mated with the 360 software (minus the proprietary Windows Media garbage). With the PS3 you're getting a better multimedia machine with some strong PS exclusive games. All around, you're getting more bang for your buck. The 360 is much easier to jump in a game with friends and also has some excellent multiplayer games (like Left 4 Dead ).

If you're looking for a used system, I would personally feel much more comfortable buying a used PS3 versus a used 360. The 360 is SO cheaply made. That and coupled with the fact that older systems are more prone to failure. My 360 is a Jasper, so I haven't had any problems with RROD, but I would bet money that my DVD drive will probably fail in a couple years. The PS3 is solid, I've had mine for a year and it's been great. It streams video/music, plays blurays, surfs the web, and plays games without breaking a sweat.

Hard drive space isn't a huge concern on the PS3 because you can replace the hard drive yourself with any drive that is compatible. Sony even provides ways to migrate your data, which gets major kudos in my book. Micro$oft makes you pay out the nose for small proprietary hard drives - and you'll need the space, especially if you enjoy a quiet console. I import most of my games to my 360 hard drive so the noisy DVD drive doesn't buzz while I'm playing a game. There is a way to pry open the HD case and exchange it for a larger one, but you would probably incur the wrath of Microsoft.

If you compare both systems feature for feature, the 360 will cost you more in the end, but you will be more satisfied. I was... but partially because I know more people who play the 360 online than the Ps3.

I have been a Playstation fan from the original. I didn't like the original Xbox and avoided purchasing a next gen console for a long time. I have to say, though, that now that I've had my 360 for a year....I LOVE it. Easy to connect with friends, great games, and no hardware issues.

I have what I guess would be a third gen Xbox (I know they had reliablility issues early on) and my system has had no problems. The infamous Red Ring of Death has been around, but MS has done a decent job of reducing hardware problems in the last year.

The only downsides to the 360 would be the ever so slight edge that PS3 has in graphics and the PS3 exclusive games like Drakes Fortune and Metal Gear. If the exclusive title thing doesn't bother you, then I'd recommend a 360.

As for the hard drive, I have a 60 gig and I have 30 open still. I own Rock Band 2, and have several games. The only way your HD will get full fast is if you are downloading tons of stuff and not cleaning it up now and then.

I've still never played a 360, so I have no idea what that console is like. I keep hearing that it is the best for online play, but I've never had any problems connecting with others on my PS3. I've used it to chat with family using the PS Eye camera and it looks very nice. Games have always connected just fine with others. As for games for little ones, there are a lot of downloadable games that are cheaper and geared more for younger people. I haven't played any of them, but I've seen them in the PS Store. Most games seem to be around ten to thirty dollars to download and you can use the PS network cards to purchase things if you don't want to put your credit card info on the network. I use the network cards, which you can buy almost anywhere, and haven't had any problems. I've played a virtual bowling game with Hobo Joe and my mom that isn't bad. You swing the controller sort of like the Wii to bowl. There are the Lego series of games that children may enjoy, as well.

The Rock Band Games are pretty fun. I have the first, second and the Beatles that work really well. HDD size will matter, eventually, if you plan to download a lot of stuff. Changing out the HDD is very easy, though. The PS3 uses the same HDD's found in laptops. If you have info that you want to save before changing the HDD, it is also very easy. I just hooked up a USB external HDD and did the 'backup utility' before taking out the original HDD. Put in the new HDD and there is a utility for reloading all your stuff from the external HDD. You can use a thumb drive also, if you have one big enough.

I have the first gen PS3 for a few years now and don't have any complaints with it. The only thing is the web browser. I don't ever use it and it doesn't work with all sites, mostly because of the flash player. You won't be able to use it to watch TV programing, such as Hulu, through the PS3's browser. I don't think it is that big of a deal, however.
