The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body. But rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO what a ride!"

Hehe... I learned this one in what... 7th grade??? (ok...math genius here, was found to be talented early on and ended up almost completing a major in it in college). It is one of the special triangles, those being the isosceles, equilateral, and right. Indeed, this is a extra-special triangle, in that it is a 3-4-x right triangle, another example of such being the 30-60-90 and the 45-45-90 right triangles. I had to memorize the angles and side lengths of these. For this one, the two non-right angles are roughly 36.9 and 53.1 degrees. As for the value of x... I don't know if this was just joking around, or doing the most wonderful thing in the world and trying to learn something new (I would still be in college if I could afford it). So I will just say that you can either use the Pythagorean Theorem, or goto someplace Dr.Math and either search for "Triangle Formulas" or "3-4 right triangle". I will, however, give a hint... it is a special right triangle because all the sides are an integral number of units long, and indeed, this particular combination is the smallest primitive Pythagorean Triple (another hint there). And BTW... don't feel bad about not knowing what PPT is...I learned those in a senior/graduate level math course in number theory at Ohio State, and had forgotten about it until I actually did a refresh on Dr. Math following some links.
Enjoy!

lol... well if my calculations are right, that side should fall under the value of the cube root of 482, but give or take a few.

*groans* Ugh, you people weren't actually supposed to DO the math. You were supposed to giggle at it and say, "Haha, that Boingo. What would we do without her?"

Wish I had thought of this one in High School! (I won't be letting Nic see this one, I'm sure a teacher conference would follow soon after! LOL)
Oh, and to go along the lines of Spacey's post, if your a carpenter or contractor 3-4-5 (actually 6-8-10 is easier for this, but the Pythagorean Theorem itself is a great help if learned by heart in as many of its forms as you can remember ) is ingrained in your head for the making of true 90's in your project.

and for everything else, stick with 42. It's your best bet.

Stephen: Stephen is my name. I'm the most wanted man on my island, except I'm not on my island, of course. More's the pity.
Hamish: "Your island"? You mean Ireland?
Stephen: Yeah. It's mine.
Hamish: You're a madman.
Stephen: I've come to the right place then! |

In all seriousness (SHYA?!) The equasion is:
A(squared) + B (squared) = C (squared)
SO...its 9 + 16 = 25. SqRt of that is...well you know.

Notice the Monkey at bottom left of the page with the shirt.
HA! Thats me!
In the case of just bad math... we are told to round up if the decimal is .5 or greater. SO, 2.49 would round down to 2 with no decimal place.
BUT, 2.49 + 2.49 = 4.98 wich would be rounded up to 5. WHALA!
So, in a sence, it is a true statement....kinda

How do you know I missed it?? Maybe I was trolling to see if I could get any bites, and to liven up the thread. You won't catch me admitting that I missed it. Nope, no-sir-ee bob, not this uber-uber geek!!!
On the t-shirts, I loved a number of them in college, like the one with Maxwell's Equations, which was "And God said .... and there was Light, and the Light was good!" And I also loved to freak people out with reciting Pi or e to some 200+ places... got to be a regular contest item for the folks I hung out with at Ohio State. YUP! UBER GEEK AND PROUD OF IT!!!
