By the way, I know there are honest people - well, some at least - left in the world (I take my share of knocks for being honest myself) so that's why I said "businesses" and of course, it was an exaggeration - maybe my next call will be to Titanium.wombaT's brother in Las Vegas (although that will make for an expesive house call!)

Its not just HVAC companies.
There seem to be more cool people than users out there, its just that 30 average encounters are overshadowed by that one nightmare.

The "problem" is that no one thinks to mention it when something goes fairly well. If it was remarkably good, they may mention it, but they're just as likely to forget it and move on with their lives.
But if some task/encounter/event turns out to be a "nightmare", then the person who had to put up with it will want to talk about it, partially as stress relief. Also, storms make better stories than smooth sailing, to put it shortly.

Remember the old saying: "One Aw s*** is worth 100 atta-boys"

Oh... the joys one can have with water heaters. A few years back, I was cleaning up part of the rats nest of plumbing which was over top of our water heater, while also redoing some crappy 1/2" line with 3/4" line to do away with some nasty pressure drops. I was sweating a cap onto a pipe I had cut off, the very hot cap went **POIT** from the buildup in pressure from the tiny bits of water left in the pipe turning to steam, the slip joint pliers got bumped, fell down the side of the hot water heater, and broke the lower drain off ***inside*** the threaded part of the heater. Let me tell you, there is nothing like screaming and yelling for someone to come help you while you try to stop scalding hot water from flowing out of a 50 gallon water heater. I spent the rest of the day cleaning up the mess, trying to get the last bits of the faucet out, and finish up the work.
Grrrrr.... (but I would not trade it for anything in the world but one...)
Oh... and the fun of dealing with work one did between 25 and 30 year ago, when we did not figure we would ever have to take down the ceiling or open up the box work around the duct work in our rec room... both necessary as I run RG6Q to replace the old RG58/9, and Cat 6 for phone and computer networking.
