Well, as other DC'ers know, times are tough.

My heart goes out to those who are out of work.

The job I'm on is wrapping up and I was pulled aside today by my foreman. He said the there is no work in my area, and that they want to send me and another electrician to New York next week to work for a couple weeks. He basically said that if you don't take this assignment you will be layed off. As most of you know I have two small children.

My wife is gone as well on business for 10 days starting on Sunday. Fortunately my mother is retired and can help out. I am very concerned that when I return that the work picture is bleak. I don't want to go, but I'm afraid if I say no, that they may lay me off. I may get laid off when I return, but at least I will get a couple more paychecks in the meantime.

I'm still trying to sell my house (a year into it), and my stress level has never been higher.

I guess I'm just venting, but I love my DC family and just ask for your thoughts and prayers. I really need to keep this job....

Here's hoping that the job market improves and we all get some stability back in our lives.

I hope things work out for you.

I just signed up for a orientation class thing to go do some flood relief work in ND and the wife is wanting to move and is looking at moving there cuz they have the lowest unemployment rate in the country. and the job if I get it is @ $10 hr with 60 to 70 hrs per week for about 30 days they estimate.

I may be getting old and falling apart but I can sure can raise Hell and have fun doing it!

I'm sorry. Seems like the miseries are piling on ya. Hang strong, my friend.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, Electrician... for what it's worth, hope things start looking up soon. I recently had a friend and bandmate of mine, who was also an electrician, get laid off from his job. Thankfully he was able to find another one fairly quick; electricians are pretty in-demand around here. I've been trying to find a second part time job near my apartment so I can get a head start on paying back my student loans after I get my EET degree, but so far no luck.

The money situation got a whole lot worse when I found out that I had around $8,000 in investments stolen from me when the broker I was using went into the hospital, and the guy who he left in charge took everything and disappeared. Really, I only lost about $1,700, which was what I initially put in, but still...

Well, I talked with my Mom last nite, and (obviously) she is overwhelmed with the passing of her mother. She was the one to watch my kids while my wife and I were away on business.
Since she is now unable to watch the kids, I had to tell my foreman today that I will not be able to go out of town for work. The funeral is next Wednesday, and I said there is a slim possibility that I may be able to go on Thursday if I can make arrangements for my kids.

They still want me to go in tomorrow for a meeting about it, so here's hoping that we can come to some sort of arrangement.

Well, I had my meeting today, and they are sending me to New York next Thursday. I'm happy I can go to the funeral.

The kid situation is being handled by my wife's wonderful extended family and best friend who are stepping up and helping out while we are gone.

The good news that I got today is that they told me they are trying to protect me and the guy going with me as best they can from layoffs. The bad news is they laid off 30 electricians today with many more to follow in the next few weeks. They also said that it won't guarantee we will have jobs when we get back, but this will buy us some time until they hopefully get some more work.

I have been with this contractor for 5 years, which helps, but construction is so very slow with no real light at the end of the tunnel yet.

Things have just got to get better.

I'm baaaaack.

After what was supposed to be a couple weeks of work (yeah right) in Amsterdam, NY, I'm finally home. Two weeks turned into two plus months.
Being away from my family was miserable. Not to mention that Amsterdam is about the most boring town imagineable. We went to Cooperstown one weekend to check out the MLB hall of fame. That was spectacular.

I got back about a week and a half ago just in time for my little guy's first birthday, then two days later flew to Jamaica with my wife to celebrate our 10th anniversary. It was a MUCH needed vacation and we had a wonderful time. That was our 3rd time there and we already are thinking about when we can go again.

The manpower guy at the shop says he'll put my name on the white board as being available for work starting Monday, so here's crossing my fingers that they have some work for me.

Good to be home.
