Check out this article about the future(?) of computer chips and computing.

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/8c0a68b0-c1bc-11df-9d90-00144feab49a.html?ftcamp=rss

Fascinating and very exciting if they can put this technology to practical uses.

Just think of how well UT would run on one of those babies!

Bummer I don't have an account either, but I have heard of quantum computing before. I wonder if quantum computing motherboards will put on a light show when they're processing

Odd, I don't have an account with FT either, but the link worked for me the first time. Now they seemed to have blocked it with the registration screen.

Try this instead:

Got word of this some months ago, probably from MPC... The thought of such a leap in computing has been a wonder of mine for years. It's only now that the technology has shrunk enough to make it feasible to actually attempt. INTEL too has started to utilize fiber optics in communication other than network and audio... Their Light Peak looks promising, but is causing them to stall adoption of USB 3 in their offerings.

Maybe not, but you'll be around to watch us play on it!

Who knows? Breakthroughs happen. The technology could come to market faster than expected.

That seems hard to fathom now, but think about it. 15 years ago, 1.4MB floppies were the standard for data transfer and took forever to fill up. And nowadays, we transfer 1.4MB or more practically instantly with batting an eyelash.

and back then code was a lot tighter than the slop code now! I got castle wolfenstein 3D on 2 floppy disks! I spent hrs playing that game!
Memory was in the low mega bite size and HD's was just getting to the 500+ mega bite size maybe the 750 range! now its 500+giga bite and tera bite and beyond size! hell my 1st puter I built was a 486sx25 that did 33mhz on turbo! 20 yrs ago! and the fastest at that time i think was maybe 66mhz!

Technology advances at such a rapid rate that I have a much more open mind about future possibilities than ever before.

Growing up before PC's and watching the evolution in the last 25 years has been astounding. As a kid, I remember being so excited playing Zork. Text adventures were awesome. Try explaining why those games were fun to a teenager. "You mean there were NO GRAPHICS?!?" "That would mean I'd have to *gulp* use my imagination!".

Memory keeps getting cheaper. Chips keep getting faster. All-in-one devices are basically a reality. As 4G networks take over, the age of information will kick into hyper-drive. 3G is still barely a toddler, and 4G is already a reality.

I love it. Can't wait for the next advances.

Zork rules! I can remember playing that thing for hours on end with no graphics, just the pictures in my head. At the time, it seemed just as exciting as the games we have now. I would flinch every time that dang thief showed up. Especially if he stole something i was about to use.

I saw that they came out with a graphic version a ways back, but I just knew it would not be as exciting as when i first played it. Sort of like being disappointed by a movie after you already read the book.
