Ok so this is the fifth time in a row I've logged on and have had major lag and on top of that I noticed I am also having packet loss as well. Any idea's of what's behind it and how it can be fixed? Let me know please.

I get moments as well, not constantly tho...just a jump here and there.
You experience it with any other servers or online games?

Yes. It happens on the UT3 server as well. It's quite agitating. It also happens on my GuildWars account. So there's three. Any idea on what might be up?

Can you ping a remote IP and see if you get a % of packet loss?
Pathping would work good as well as it will do each hop to the target.

Try a bandwidth test as well to see how fast your running.. speedtest.net is a good one, along with bandwidthplace.com

I actually had issues with my router and would loose packets to there...so ping your router at the gateway address to see if you have packet loss there to help eliminate a local issue.

Well flak show me how to do it and I'll try em all. I think I did a speed test awhile back and it said I was about at top speed for our provider. I don't know how to do the remote IP packet loss thing or the gateway address thing.

to ping an IP, in the command prompt, type: PING WWW.XXXX.YYYY.ZZZ (the IP number of the remote server or router) DNS addresses work as well if you have a server out there you don't know the IP of.

To do a pathping...same but type PATHPING instead.

To get your gateway IP, type IPCONFIG at the command prompt. Should be the last line.

Do not do a pathping to your gateway..wont do any more than ping will. pathping is a combo of Ping and Tracert commands. Pathping will send a ping to each hop along the way to a target. this tool allows you to find a weak link in the path to a target IP. Best used for LAN diagnosis though as your route to a destination on the WWW will change as network traffic changes.

First step, get you default gateway IP.

Ping that IP and see if you have packet loss.

Next , Ping the ISP servers...only one you may have is their DNS servers. You can get that by typing in IPCONFIG /ALL at the command prompt. You want the first DNS IP.

If you can do that without packet loss, then try something out a ways like Yahoo or Google. If nothing comes back with any packet loss try the extended test (below)

One thing also to try is an extended PING. Default is 4 echo requests. Intermittent issues may not be discovered with 4. you can extend that by typing: PING -n 10 "IP or server name" to get 10 echo requests. you can use any number, I chose 10 as an example to do an extended time frame.

My guess is, you have something going on at your end at your house to your ISP if it's happening at other game servers. Could be router, cabel, NIC, something between your house and the ISP. If it persists, have costomer servers test the connection to your cable modem.

Just a note, the default gateway is either your router (if you have one) or the cable modem. It is the EXIT point of you network to the next. I don't know your setup so I'm just letting you know what it is. You can ping the router and the cabel modem. Start locally and more outword step by step. Here is where pathping can help. If you use PATHPING "DNS server IP", it should ping each step of the way. use the -n # switch to increase it to greater than 4 echos for an extended test.

Let me know how it goes.
