AMD is a good chip but the current offerings are too slow for today's gaming pcs.
As to the motherboard brand, go with evga as they offer limited lifetime warranties.
Other good brand for AMD is DFI LanParty and Gigabyte.
Here's the spec sheet for the latest AMD Phenom
Gigabyte motherboard

Chipset Manufacturer AMD
Chipset 790GX
Socket AM2+
Memory Amount UDIMM DDR2
PCI Express Gen2
Integrated Graphics 1
Max TDP Supported No
Processor AMD Phenom™ X4 Quad-Core
Model 9850
OPN Tray HD985ZXAJ4BGH
OPN PIB HD985ZXAGHBOX
Operating Mode 32 Bit Yes
Operating Mode 64 Bit Yes
Revision B3
Core Speed (MHz) 2500
Voltages 1.05-1.3V

L1 Cache Count 4
L2 Cache Size (KB) 512

notice the core speed is only 2500MHz, Intel's I7 series is 3000MHz.

Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 Desktop Memory $47.99
Antec earthwatts EA500 500W Continuous Power ATX12V v2.0 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply $69.99
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500418AS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive $59.99

Bought everything from newegg. Pretty much everything had free shipping.
They are pretty decent machines...I could put a $50 graphics card in and make them good for gaming.
