Dear Diary, my life has changed...

As you know, I lost my job of 8 years in January. Now we have made the decision to move to Savannah, GA. We just spent 2 weeks down there to establish residency and hunt for jobs, and returned last night. 1200 miles each way is a long way. 2 days of hard driving takes a toll on the body. It was good to be back in Green Bay, just to be in a place with space and my own bed. Now we have 3 weeks to make all the final preps before I pick up a 22ft Penzke truck.

My nerves are shot. Confidence is low. It will be an adventure. I will keep you all abreast of what is going on as I can. I have yet to get cable settled there as I dont know if my provider is there or not. I dont want to switch to Comcrap. But I may have too. More to come as I have it.

Time Warner doesn't cover that area anymore.
Most of the logistics are taken care of while we swim thru a sea of boxes. I have to clean out the garage yet, pack the computer (not till the last week before we move) and the bed.

Living out of suitcases now as we will be wrapping up the furnature this week.
I hate moving, but I hope it's for the best. Was nice being warm outside in February. Was a new thing for me.

May go back to school during this downtime and get my MCSE. That should open up more doors than I have now. Would be quicker than going back and getting a BS degree (just have AA now). Anyway, 3 weeks to go... I'll play on and off as I have time to keep the fingers nimble...Don't wanna be rusty by the time I get down there.

Only reason I'm reluctant with Comcast is that they have been caught lying about throttling P2P traffic and have done so for a while. They backed off of that from public backlash. now they have a DL cap (so much for "unlimited") Not that I will ever reach that, but I hate companies that do that to their customers. Plus they are more expensive than TWC here in Wis. My bills are going up from moving there, I didnt need to add one more thing. But I negotiated a better rate for a year. Even tho it's calculated that Savannah is 8% more expensive to live there, Rent is 33% more than here. I sure hope the pay will follow suite.

Dear Diary,

Today we venture out into the 12 degree (man I wont miss this) weather.
Very cold with 30-50 mph winds. We are getting some last minute things, new pillows and other stuff.

It feels like we are in a holding pattern. Most everything is packed except what we use everyday. Would could leave today if we had the truck and stuff ( and help to pack it).

Anyone who has every traveled down I-40 from Tnn. to NC knows what I'm worried about. It's day 2 of the trip down in a 22 ft Penzke going thru the Smokeys. Not fun. White knuckle in a car the first time...this time I will be in the tuck lane the whole time doing 30-40. There is no room in that left lane at all. I know it can be done, but I dont have that kind of confidence in my driving or the person next to me. So day 2 of the trip may no be as far as I would like. This is why I scheduled 3 days for the trip down in the truck, where it's 2 days by car.

Side note, has anyone got an email in the past few years with funny street signs or unfortunate photos...anyway, there was one for an exit to the Bat Cave...well, we pass that very sign on our trip down. It's in North Carolina.

In Houston, Time Warner was switched to Comcast last year. It turned out that it was part of an agreement a while back that they will switch control every now and then. I didn't see a big increase during the switch. They did increase their prices last month about $5 for every item.
We got rid of our cable box (dvr) back during the writers strike...since there wasn't anything interesting on. That saved us over $30/mo. The writers strike really helped break our tv habits, because we still have no desire to go back. The only channels that get watched now are kid channels, and my son doesn't care if he can't rewind.

The main thing is that I was surprized how much the cable box really cost us...all the fees seemed small, but they were numerous.

The internet throttling issue is not that big of a deal to me.

They don't throttle encrypted connections.

I also never expect a p2p download to be fast anyway.

Many people overload their router with p2p traffic, therefore throttle their connection anyway.

The cap is a legitimate solution. Would you rather pay extra to cover the bandwidth someone else is using.
I inquired about the cap, and got a generic answer about how many photos i can download...etc. Since they don't have any way for the consumer to measure their bandwidth, it should be easy to fight it. ("But I only downloaded 4 pictures this month!!!")

Dear Diary,

Friday we took the cat to the vet (he was not a happy kitty) Had to have all his shots up to date for the new appt to take him. Saturday was a last visit with her mother...that went poorly.

Every day is a little more anxiety and a little more closer to M day. Still have to pack the computers and the last minute stuff around the house and the bed. I just want to get this over with.

We have a last hoorah this Friday at third annual Fest of Ale in town. Taste beer for 4 hours and say goodbye to old friends of the past 6 years. I will miss many things about this place, even though the winter's suck. I will have to adapt to a new way of life in the south.

My last DC time was today, maybe tomarrow if the wife doesn't complain about it, but I doubt it. So I will be off for at least till April 1st or so (Cable gets hooked up the 30th). So this will be my last entry this month.

Wish me luck as 1200 miles is a long way over 3 days in a 22' truck with the wife in my car right behind me. This should cause some good beer thirst by days end. We both feel bad for the cat to be locked in his carrier for 3 days. We hope it does fine.
