New DVD-R Help

So I got a DVD-R for my computer because I had bought a game that required a DVD-R to install it. I got it all hooked up and everything but the thing isn't working, the little green light is on but the tray wont open, and when I used the Ejection Pin to open it via the Emergency Eject Hole and put the Software disc in it didn't start up or read it.
I don't know a lot about computers so I hope you understand what I'm about to say;
I have a NX6600GT(I think that's what it said) in there and the fan on it is busted (I'll have my dad fix that when he gets back). I don't know if that would cause the DVD-R to not work.
Anybody have any help/advice/tips they could give me?

fan could be an issue
bigger one may be your power supply and what the dvd drive requires (along with everything else onboard)

My dad ended up having to come over and mess around with it (plus he fixed the fan)
Nothing he did could make the DVD-R work so he ended up buying a new one and that one worked fine.
