Ok. so I have not completed the game yet.
Game play: The force unleashed has a few original mechanics in game play but most of the best elements are borrowed from previous Jedi games. unlike previous jedi games you cannot just rely on FPS reflexes and your lightsabre to carry the battle. Even stormtroopers are smarter than they were in previous games, and other enemy's in the game can and will kill you if you do not use your other powers.
The Force: is powerful and your ally but you need to figure out which combo of powers works most efficiently v.s. different bad guys. This is partially determined by how many ranks you have in a given force power. While you can avoid some bad guys (or good guys) it does not pay off in character development because the number of force points you have to distribute comes directly from the number of enemy defeated. extra points can be earned by finding secrets like Jedi Holocron.
Story: (ok) the story is tacked on to the area just before episode 4 (a new hope). I wouldn't say that the story is bad, it is O.K. they tried and for a video game thats pretty good.
Visuals: Stunning. beautiful. The scope is wide, the depth of field is deep and the locations are vivid (even when they are drab, they are vividly drab if that makes any sense). My only complaint, is that the face of the characters looks so very real, and the eyes do not. every pore, piece of stubble and bead of sweat show up in huge detail and look nearly perfect, but the eyes look like semi flat pools of mud without distinct curve or delineation between the lids, eyelashes. its almost painful but luckily you only have to look at them during the cut scenes.
That's the basic review if I were to rate it one to ten I give it a solid 9.

He must be playing on PS3 or 360.
I've rented and played the first few levels on the Wii version. Controls are a bit confusing at first, but you'll quickly become used to them. The force powers really stand out, but you get used to that tried and true videogame convention: Not everything you'd expect to break breaks. Only parts of walls can be exploded. Many barrels are indestructable no matter how many times you toss them.
Graphics are decent but not amazing. My son (7) remarked that the outer space scenes looked "fake."
The versus battle mode is pretty fun, but I'm not sure how balanced it really is. Some of the arenas have an open pit in the middle. My son and I took turns grabbing each other with the force, moving the other person to the middle of the pit, and letting go for an instant kill. All in all it's a fun game, and especially worth playing if you're Star Wars fan.
