Alice and the Hatter: Quotes: Alice in Wonderland
Alice: What a funny watch! It tells the day of the month, and it doesn't tell what o'clock it is!
The Hatter: Why should it? Does your watch tell you what year it is?
Alice: Of course not, but that's because it stays the same year for such a long time together.
The Hatter: …which is just the case with mine.

Link and rocks are handled differently from rl or lg
I think the server/client is just notified that the link is turned on or a rock was thrown...then only cares about it until the link is turned off or the rock hits something. Since rockets can change direction it is a different issue. rockets can be updated of their velocity vector. lightning gun is a one time shot, and it could be that the udp packet could get dropped for that as well, but the firing rate is so much lower, you may not figure anything was wrong.

What kind of ping do you normally get?
What type of internet do you use?
Was anyone else having an issue with lag at the time?
Is it still doing it?
How many computers do you have connected to your internet?
Are you or anyone else running any file sharing programs on your internet connection?
Do you have wireless internet that someone could be stealing your bandwidth?
Some internet providers also share bandwidth between customers so if your neighbor is using a file sharing program that is too aggressive then this problem could occur.

I'm beginning to have this issue lately too. Except people and creatures begin to disappear as well and it gets progressively worse through the later waves. It also appears to correlate to several people (8+ perhaps) being on at once. And begins to happen at waves 11+. It happens fairly consistently when there are more people on. And seems to get better when people start dying off...

If I disconnect and rejoin the problem resolves itself.

From the questions you asked Hatter before:
1. I have cable internet, usually around 70 ping on DC, which doesn't appear to change when this issue occurs.
2. Someone else did mention not being able to see at the same time I was having problems.
3. Only one computer is connected to my internet and there are no file sharing programs running.
4. I use ethernet.
5. I can't say for sure if my ISP shares bandwidth, it appears to fluctuate somewhat depending on the time of day. But even so I play during the quiet hours anyway.

Are there any practical solutions for this?

This is part of the reason why the link gun was nerfed for engineers.
Each player is limited to a certain amount of bandwidth. This means that any information that exceeds the bandwidth will be dropped, such as projectiles, monsters...etc.

Also server maintenance could cause similar issues.

The clients stop rendering objects when bandwith becomes limited. UT2004 does this to prevent more lag when it is already laggy enough.
