I finally replaced my old computer with a new.
I currently only have Ubuntu 8.04 (64bit linux) for my OS. I am not ready to transfer my license for XP to my new yet (hopefully M$ will let me.) I will most likely get Vista when I go back to school in the fall.
I got UT2004 running on linux. Everything is working except I can not seem to get the text to speech working.
Has anyone else had success setting up TTS and UT2004 in linux...and if so are you using the 32bit version? I am suspecting it maybe an issue with the 64bit openal.so libraries.

If I can't get it to work I might just live with it until vista...so if you are trying to get my attention and I don't respond, I am most likely not ignoring you....just oblivious.

I am curious to try UT2004 in a virtualized XP enviroment and see how it performs.

Apparently DirectX support is still limited with most virtualization software...although some say they will be supporting it soon.

Greg, so could it be the same DirectX issue that has nixed my TTS?

I just blew out my old computer speakers (no I wasn't blaring them when it happened, ok, maybe not that loud anyway) and bought another pair that just connects through one of my USB ports. Without any game setting changes, my TTS has now suddenly dissappeared and all sorts of tweaking to the controls on my computer and the game cannot bring it back.

I know that these speakers have an internal sound card, so they bypass my current one. Any thoughts?

Are we talking windows or linux?
I would think changing your speakers shouldn't change anything...changing your sound card could though.
The usb speakers generally use the usb port for powering the amplifier.
If the usb port is the only connection to the computer then it is possible that they are bypassing your sound card.
What brand are they.
have you checked the mixer settings?
Edit: I see now that logitech makes some with the built in sound card

If windows: what happens if you start narrator?
START>RUN>narrator
it should say some stuff like "FowardGround window...blah blah"
if it doesn't, check your mixer settings.

Thanks for all of the great advice.

I am currently out of town on business and did not get a chance to read all of the advice here and try it out last night when I was in the game.

Greg, I have windows XP. You figured it out, the speakers have a built in sound card. I did not really need it, but it allows me to move the speakers to Clue's or my laptop for some good sounds.

I will check narrator and my mixer when I get back this Friday and let you know what I find.

Pain, I have not done anything to my old sound card. I just plugged in the new speakers, it found the USB device, auto-installed some software and said I was ready to go. They have been working fine since (except for the TTS issue that is).

While I am checking out the mixer, I will go in and disable my old sound card.

Thanks again for the advice and I will give an update this Friday when I get back in town.

Road wins the booby prize. All I had to do was disable my old sound card and now things work great.

Thanks again to both of you for the advice. =D>
