I don't think the person actually dented the car, they just wanted to psych the owner out. It's a good idea... I should try it sometime

You don't know how many times I've wanted to do that!!!!!!! Sweet.

I used to have a very nice 68 RS Camaro that I raced when I was younger. I rarely drove it to places, but the very first time I did, someone put a dent in my driver's side door. The very first time. So, after that, I actually started taking up two spots, but I took those spots way out away from everything. The first dent on my new car I have now is from someone opening their door into my front quarter panel. Basically what I'm trying to get at is I can see why someone would do that. Not saying you should, but I can understand. Too many people do not have respect for other people's property. Even when I park way out in a parking lot, which I still do, I still get people doing stuff to my car from time to time. I've actually had someone tell me that I must have a lot of money, so it doesn't really matter. No, I save up for the things I have and work for them. Sorry if I ruined this thread.

Nope, you did not ruin this thread. All of us have wanted to do something like this at one time or another, but we did not. My wife's birthday present last year, the Monte Carlo SS (mentioned in another post), has 2 dents where people have opened their car door into it because they didn't care.

I don't object to people taking two spaces in a large parking lot if they park away from the other cars and the lot is unlikely to fill up.

Someone has hit the bumper of my S60 TWICE in the past year in our residential parking lot (I wasn't taking up two spaces and I was definitely in the lines). I can't take up two spaces because I would get a ticket... I can't park out in the boonies because I'll probably get my windshield smashed by a foul ball (this has already happened to me)... I can't park up front because all the stupid people park there who don't park within the lines and are reckless drivers in general... all this and no one has the courtesy to leave a note on my car!

ahhhhh

Well, a note like the one on the picture wouldn't help

I must admit that I used to take up two spaces (same as Cham - far away and all that) until my car got the first ding - after five years. It was immaculate before then. Now it looks like a wacky races car.

Ahhhh, and stuff like that is why I own old cars. They are not too bad, but it just don't matter. and if they look bad enough, people will even not park close to you!

Current: 92 chevy S10 blazer. 4wd.

lastly, a friend of mine has a newish car, he uses pool noodles and a sign. the sign reads filming for cops in progress, please proceed with caution.

Is it just in New York or does it seem like they never really give enough space to park your car.

I think that when parking lots are laid out they asume a certain width of a car without regard to door opening swing.

My '96 firebird's door must be 3ft at full extention, There have been times I've had to climb in through the hatch!!!!

Its all building code stuff. depending on where you live, a building with parking may have to have a paticular number of parking places with a percentage of those for "the differently abeled" based on its footprint or occupancy. Most places on the other hand don't have to have a minimum size except its supposed to fit a car. I think that they use matchbox cars to come up with the size most places.

I try to ride my motorcycle to work when I can - then I have no parking issues but yeah, otherwise the spaces are way too narrow.
