R.I.P. Gary Gygax

"Ernest Gary Gygax ( July 27, 1938 – March 4, 2008 ) was an American writer and game designer, best known for co-creating the pioneering role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) with Dave Arneson, and co-founding the company Tactical Studies Rules (TSR, Inc.) with Don Kaye in 1973. Gygax is generally acknowledged as the father of the role-playing game."

I tend to make light of certain things, particularly death. I have a friend who does the same.

When Roy Scheider died, I called him and said, "We're gonna need a bigger coffin."

So it was today that I sent him an email that said "Roll to save ... failed!" And the ensuing phone call included:

Him: "When I first heard I was all like 'He rolled a 99'."
Me: "More like he rolled a 1."

and

Him: "I wonder if he'll be buried in a felt bag."

You started it Gary. Thank you.

While there era that he he was most involved in has passed, and evolved into something much more complete, his ideas will live on.........

I'm sick. Because of his ideas and planning on D&D, he opened the door to other games like the Diablo series..............

A deep bow to a man that helped make the rpg world what it is today...

soo much of my childhood was spent in another world which Gary so wonderfully provided for me.

I didn't know him and never got a chance to meet him at a "con" but like Road said, I spent so much time in other worlds that he made real for us. /salute
