Just wanted to share in case anyone has an HD-DVD player or was interested in getting one.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,331150,00.html
I read some uncomfirmed articles that the Xbox will get a blu-ray attachment/add-on by early summer or so.

They took down the place on their site that said that said they would have support for HD-DVD until Toshiba officially discontinued the format.

Good news HD-DVD owners! You now have a very expensive coaster for your coffee table.
I always believed Bluray would be the winning format, but the $100 HD DVD players they were selling at walmart were very tempting. I can see this bit of news boosting PS3 sales. PS3 cost = cheapest bluray player

actually what they have is either a fairly expensive DVD player or if purchased recently they probably have a DVD player with upscaling...
As for Blu Ray, I have had a player for a year and 5 months and still only have 2 Blu Ray movies. With DVD upscaling I cant tell the difference...

Interesting how people see HD movies differently. Boingo says she doesn't really see a difference. I can see a HUGE difference between upscaling and an actual HD movie and I mean a really big difference. It is upscaling and regular DVD I don't see a difference. I guess it depends on the T.V. and stuff maybe. I can see a difference just in different HDMI cables. My first one was just some $20 one and I could see the 'noise' on the screen. It also depends on the transfer, too. I have Stargate on blu-ray and it doesn't really look all that great. You look at Casino Royale on blu-ray, it looks incredible.

If I were an HD enthusiast with an HD DVD player, I would probably deal with my loss and go out to buy a bluray player. So in that situation it would be an expensive coaster, but most people will probably keep their player for the time being to run their existing HD discs.
I can only detect a slight difference in DVD upscaling. I suppose it also depends on how recently the film was recorded. I encoded my parents movies for their Apple TV. Movies like the Princess Bride don't look that much better than the DVD, but movies like Zoolander look marginally better.
Were HD cameras used to shoot stargate? That would probably make a huge difference.

Cham, that is awesome news.
Yay! I got lucky and picked the right format.
I have had my BluRay for a little over a year now and I no longer buy regular DVDs. I have to admit that I am a big movie fan. I decided when I got my HD TV that instead of paying $75/month for digital TV, I would just get a High Def player. The decision was pretty easy on which format to choose because Clueless is a big (I mean really big) Disney fan and they were only available on BluRay.
I have a pretty good (and growing) collection so far of BluRay discs. We watch our old DVDs on an upconverted player for our HDTV, so the quality is much improved over the old 480i picture, but I still think the 1080p picture of a recently released movie far outshines (pun intended) the upconverted picture.
I was sold on the BluRay from the beginning and just got lucky with the format war outcome.

No, HD cameras weren't used for Stargate, but some movies have a really good transfer, though. Terminator 2 looks pretty good, for instance. I don't have it in HD myself, just seen it on display and it looked pretty darn good.

DVDs! I'm still trying to unload my 8 tracks!
Honestly, I'm looking to buy a PS3 later this year as it will be the cheapest BR player plus the games. As an added bonus, since it is a powerful multiprocessor computer, you can slap Linux on it an rent time out the National weather service as a baby Cray.
Cheers,
The Count
