I decided to head over to my nearest Apple store after work tonight to witness the insanity that is the iPhone. There were already about 200 people in line at the store when I got there, and although I couldn't possibly afford one of those things, it was still interesting to stick around to watch the hoopla.
About a half hour before the store opened (at 6PM), the Apple workers tore down the black paper covers that shrouded the storefront. The crowd outside went nuts and started chanting "I-P-H-O-N-E!"
See that sweaty guy running out of the store? He was the first to buy one at the location. It was totally bizarre because people were coming up to shake his hand and ask his name.
But luckily I at least got to try one out. Very cool, but not sure why I would need one... though I can certainly see why everyone is doing back flips over it.

"Not I" said the Little Red Hen.
I dont need my cell to be anything more than that. I dont even play any of the games on it. I would, however, would love it to play MP3s as the ringtone.
Idealy, it does replace all those devices that most techno geeks use daily (laptop, phone, PDA) and to carry all them is much more than a single, small unit. But, it's a "jack of all trades, master of none" deal.
and now, a word from Will Smith...no, not that one...

Smith does have a point, however not everyone needs access to third party applications. All the blackberry users I know use email, phone, and calendar functions. That's it. For them, the iPhone seems like a fit, but obviously power users who are used to windows mobile, symbian, and the rest will be disappointed.

Grizzled: that's why I didn't buy one - I mean, the cool factor was very compelling, but I don't want two devices (the bb is for work)

I love my iPod for the train ride to work if I don't feel like reading, but this is ridiculous. Seems like those little iPhones can do just about anything...can it fix my dinner? I just imagine a little pill form dinner popping out the side like on the Jetsons.

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body. But rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO what a ride!"

Honestly. I have a rule. I own the device, it does not own me.
I know people who are ruled by their communication devices, i.e. have to check mail all the time, have to take every call, etc. thats not why I own it, I own it because my workplace has an incredibly strict computer use policy. I can't use my work e-mail for anything, and I can't access non-work related internet on my computer. I am forced to justify non-intra net traffic in writing to my boss on a weekly report.
So I own a blackberry so I can keep up when I want to. Its just a plus that it does music, videos/movies internet and IM clients as well.
One of my pet peeves is proprietary devices, probably the primary reasons why I do not intend to buy a Iphone, as cool as it looks. There are a few other motion sensitive phones on the market, soon the features that the Iphone has will be ubiquitous. it is only a matter of time.

Dru would prefer I be able to do UnrealScript development on mine ... I could swear we had an IM conversation once that went something like:
Dru: Hey, how ya doing?
Me: Not bad.
Dru: Did you see that post?
Me: Yeah earlier today.
Dru: Take a look at (a particular code class) - I think that's the problem.
Me: I'm at a restaurant on my BlackBerry, waiting for some friends.
Dru: Oh! Sorry.
I've keeping the email notifications off more and more though, and only working on email when I want to; and I haven't signed into google talk for a while (really not too many people I talk to regularly there anyway - my sister SMSes me if she wants to ping me).
My Blackberry is no iPod (I mean, storage space alone it's no iPod), but I don't like the lack of a tactile keyboard on the iPhone. And work uses Exchange and doesn't have secure IMAP to it. Until there's a decent live sync and tactile keyboard on the iPhone, I don't see myself dropping that much money on one.

I tried typing on the iPhone keyboard a bit, and it was just too bizarre. It seems like they did great job of having the software guess which word you meant when you misspelled something (it's inevitable), but I can't imagine using email on an iPhone for anything more than casual usage. Though what amazed me was the speed of the iPhone. It never stuttered, not once, while I was using it... despite the fancy transitions and graphics.

I heard that it uses a modified 750 mhz processor so it should be fast>
I use the IM from blackberry to keep up with my finance, she works out of town so I don't see her 2 weeks at a time. I have yet to figure out how to make the settings work for the forums here, otherwise I might post more.
I work at an Airport so I spend time checking on the flight schedules on the internet and the whether, other than that I rarely use the internet.
As for its Ipod like capacity, I have a 2 gig card, that seems to be more than enough for all of the music that I need for a week. I just change out my playlists.
I have actually mostly stopped using it for that, I got my PSP hooked up so that it streams music from my PS3 that is getting songs, movies and pictures from my computer. I have about 170 gigs of entertainment available where ever I can find a wireless signal.
