Hello

Not sure where to post this so appologies if this is the wrong area.

Lately I have been having major stuttering? problems to the point where I die. This may be the wrong term I would call it lag but other players call it stuttering. I thought stuttering was when the sound went dadadada something like that. My FPS are 85 when this happens and it only happens on some maps.

Last night I went to Nvidia and there is a stuttering problem with Ut2004 and found a discussion UT2004 stuttering - 8800 GTX, Not a total fix, but

Interesting..." there is a consensus that it is a "8XXX/Forceware issue"

This is too technical for me and I have no help. None of my friends play games and my tech is useless he got his money and ran.

Thinking back this issue has only been a month or so. Makes me think it was the last NVidia driver update.

Questions:

1. What is vsync - some think that it has something to do with this

2. Can someone please look at the nVidia forum for me, as I do not know what to make of the suggestions?

3. Any one else with nVidia have the same problem?

4. Any volunteer/ one of my playing buddies want to look in my computer by remote?

5. 85 fps and lag at the same time I do not get it can someone please explain this to me.

6. What can I do I am frightened to change settings/drivers that I know nothing about?

Here is the last post on the Nvidia site:

" hey guys, i came across this beta driver and it has fixed the stuttering issues in ut2004 for me http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_160.02.html forceware 160.02, even though its a quadro release it supports my 8800gts fine! performance seems on par with the 158.22's i was using previously too."

Many thanks, Yvonne aka Miss Kitty aka bignosycat

All hardware needs a bit of software to tell your computer how to use it properly. This is called a driver.

Forceware is what nVidia has termed its drivers for your card. Apparently, there are some problems with your card and UT2004. It happens sometimes.

I can't address all your questions, but I do have these:

1. If you've ever seen a TV on TV, you know how the picture goes from top to bottom when it refreshes? You can see it blinking, and even sometimes see a line moving down the screen.

Remember that the camera recording that TV is also doing that line thing. That's why you see the line - the camera's line is not in sync with the TV's. If they were synced up, then you wouldn't see the line.

Now replace the TV with your monitor, and the camera with your video card. vsync - vertical synchronization - makes your video card update in time with your monitor's refreshes. It can decrease performance slightly at the cost of a smoother look to games.

3. I have problems with my nVidia card, but they are different than yours.

5. FPS is the speed at which your computer is refreshing the picture in the game (see above with vsync and refreshing).

Lag refers to delay in any number of places, but usually delay in sending data to and from the server (the computer near Dru and Shan's place running the DC game and website in this instance).

If you are experiencing low FPS, it usually means your computer lacks the power to display what you're asking it to display properly. Knowing the specs of your system, I can say this is not the case.

If you are experiencing lag - undue delay in receiving data from the server - that can be caused by connection problems. Or, perhaps less common, lag may refer to laggy input. The game feels like it's reacting to your mouse movements and keypresses slowly, for example. That's indicative of a different problem on your system.

Finally, I would recommend against installing beta (incomplete) drivers as recommended in that last post. Your level of proficiency with computers might make that somewhat difficult (but there's not anything wrong with that!)

Try going into your display properties and turning down hardware acceleration. Yes it'll slow your card down a little but that thing will still eat UT for breakfast and might make it more stable. And just turn it up again later when nVidia comes up with a real fix.

right click desktop -> properties -> settings tab -> advanced button -> troubleshoot tab -> slide acceleration down a notch and keep bringing it down 'till it gets stable.

Hello

Moof: Thank you so much for the information I needed the education in this matter. It may be obvious to most but not to me as I did not grow up with computers. My first computer was a Texas Instuments99 that was many years ago and I purchased the next in 2001 or 2 cannot remember. I am good with programs but not with hardware.
Thank you for taking the time to help I appreciate it.

The last few days my computer has played great I had a problem with 1 map.

Tonight, June 27th I made the adjustment Llchior suggested will see if it works.

Nvidia seems to think it is not their problem.

Many thanks for the help.

Yeah i have the same problem, but it happens very rarely, like 1 in every 20 boots.
The stuttering is actually really bad cause it also affects the whole computer, not just the game. Even when i exit the game, the stuttering still occurs.

I had a conversation with missy kitty in the game a while ago and she told me it was the 8800 graphics cards that had a reputation of causing the problem. She also told me it was something to do with the recent driver update, but i was sure it wasen't that as i have updated my graphics driver 3 times but i still had the problem.

So anyway, i think the problem is hardware related, but if nvidia can address this problem, then i'm sure they will release a fix for this problem.

Nice cat by the way kitty, my cat is fat and lazy
