Hey, everyone. I've been away for a few reasons.

I'd been having some bluescreen issues with my video card drivers, but that's kinda fixed - at least the bluescreens. Work was also crazy.

But the main reason I stopped playing was....well, the community likes the same maps. Over and over and over. I respect that. I'm just one man, and this is a democratic system. But I think right before I stopped playing again, I logged in on three consecutive days and played a few games each day - and only played maybe 5 or 6 maps in those 9 or so games. Two days in a row I logged in at different times to find Sympathy in progress. At this point, I'd rather play crappy maps forever than ever play any map currently in the top 25 (all good maps!) again.

That aside! Engineers are in, and I can look forward to something different. But no sooner do I decide to come back than it's summer in DC and 105°+ heat index outside (three days so far this week). Now I'm getting bluescreens for heat-related problems (as I write this it's 85.4° in my room).

I don't have my air conditioner up yet, but once I have that set, I should be able to get this place cooled off again. So, I'll be away for a few more days until I've got that all fixed up.

See you soon!

With ya there! That's why I'm likely to vote for a random map found near the bottom of the list.

I've been trying to get players to vote for the new maps that Dru and Shan have loaded. Sometimes, it's hard!!!!!

Would it be possible to cycle maps off the list? Like, if a map gets more than 5 plays in a given time, it's "retired" for a week or something...

I dunno, random brain droppings.

I'm with ya on that one, Moof. I always vote for maps that I either haven't ever (at least don't remember) played, or maps we haven't played in a loooooooong time.

Variety is good for two reasons:

1. Playing the same old maps gets boring

2. Playing maps we haven't played but once or twice forces players to do a bit of exploring rather than camping out in the same old spots on the usual maps

So here's hoping more players go for the less traveled maps from now on.

I kinda like the idea, however, if people really want to play a certain map, I don't think they should be penalized for it. Democracy!

Whenever a map is played, you have to play a certain number of other maps before that map can be voted back on again. Not sure what the number is currently. But if DC gets through about 50 maps per day assuming 30 mins each, if the vote restriction is set to 100 maps, then you will only be able to play it every other day, and it also means there must be at least 100 maps being played.
Just a thought

EDIT: I notice on the MapInfo page on the main webpage there is a column called sequence number. This goes up, but occassionally jumps - I presume this is either where a map has been removed, or more likely where a map has been replayed.
At the moment of posting this, the first gap is at 27, between DM-StalwartXLClassic and DM-CBP2-TelMecoMEX_Shantys_request.
If this is the case, then there are only 2 gaps in the first 90 maps, but after that loads of gaps (at this point of time - may have changed by the time you are looking at it). Which would suggest we have a core of 90 ish maps that get replayed.

Consider the number of maps we have on the server (407 based on the list at http://www.disastrousconsequences.com/dc/maps.jsp) and other factors indicate that we DO need to rotate the maps to keep them fresh and also to get other good maps played more often. Human nature being what it is, the same old maps will suffice for many players as they can get into their comfort zone.

The game, as we play it, is not meant to be a comfort zone of any sort but to keep you on the edge at all times.

What about having the "retired" maps still vote-able but must receive a unanimous vote to be played?
