I was wondering if anyone may be able to help me with this minor computer issue I've been having. It started about a month ago, every now and then when I play a game, the game will freeze for about 5-10 seconds. In this freeze it puts me at a standstill, buzzes, then jumps back into play a few seconds later. Online I still move as if I was playing, but I can't see it... when I'm not online I stay in place as if it were the game. Not sure why it started, but it's done it three times in UT and a few times in other games.

The other thing that's odd is that I've completely reformatted after it started this, but it appears that didn't help. Any ideas on how I may be able to fix this?

That's happened to me before too, but mainly because I have an old computer and hangs whenever the antivirus decides to do something useless.

Anyhow, check the temp inside your box too. If it's not some program causing it or hardware issues, it could be the temp... I know my comp had temperature issues, and I fried a video card and exploded a sound card before dealing with it. haha.

If the problem is temperature related, make sure the innards are relatively dust free. Too much dust = overheating.

I cleaned a computer once that was so bad, it was a small miracle that any air made it through the vents.

Yeah, I sprayed it out about a week ago... it's looking much nicer than it did in my dorm .... but I've run spybot and avg, we'll see if that helps. If it is temperature related, does that mean I may be in need of a better fan or maybe a better vented tower?

You can pick up a muffin fan pretty cheap and mount it either in the front bottom (blowing in) or rear back of the box (blowing out) and it should take care of any heat problem you have. (unless your really overclocking your mobo or video card?) It's an easy fix, and one that I usually do standard if I help anyone build tower. (It does increase te amount of dust you will accumulate though.)
But it really sounds to me like something is running in the backround and eating up extra memory or cpu power. Check your Start Up folder in the start menu (I assume you are using windows?) and see if anything is in there. I usually delet anything in there right off the bat. You can always start an application on your own. (it is safe to delete stuff in this folder, they are just short cuts). If that doesn't help, hit the old ctrl+alt+del and check what is running. You also can customise what services windows starts up automatically by going to control panel, administrative tools, services. Try this web site http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm#Services for a discription of each service and whether you need it to be on or not.

Thanks for the advice... my startup only consists of my wireless card and my video card has been running smoothly. AVG didn't find anything wrong so I'm going to look into a new fan. I'll have to make sure my processor is the right socket, but I'm looking at this one. Pretty much anything is better than my stock one and for 40 bucks It's worth a shot.

edit: Well, bad news... I may be out of commission for a little while. I took my fan off to only to find out that that doesn't help in finding out the socket number. I put it back on, but now my computer shuts down within 15 seconds of startup due to CPU overheating. I'm going to leave it off until the above new fan comes in. So I may try to play a bit on my laptop, but we shall see.

Well my computer is all fixed and quiet as ever... It seems like it was indeed the fan, but still haven't given it the full test run yet in UT. It ended up costing a bit more than expected to get it fully functional, but It'll be nice to have it not freezing ... anyway, thanks for all of the help and can't wait to get back on to join the fun!

*cries* well I guess it's not fixed.... it's running quieter and cooler, but not better. Rather than one freeze per 10 minutes it froze 5 times in a row within 1 minute. However, this time the clicking noise was softer through the headset... but that may just be the game. Could it possibly be the video card, kind of like Miss_Kitty's stuttering issue? I have an Nvidia 7800 GT if that helps... since it's only happening during games that may be it, but I can't imagine that the card would have a problem running UT.

Pyr, have you tried running memtest86+ yet?
