To the DC community,

Have fun, enjoy the day, eat lots of food, and so on.

However, please take a moment today to think and remember why we have this holiday.

Honor the fallen warrior heros of yesterday, salute those who are on active duty around the world today, and if they happen to be home, give them an extra hug from the rest of us.

Let us not fool ourselves into thinking we went to the Moon because we are pioneers, or discoverers, or adventurers. We went to the Moon because it was the militaristically expedient thing to do. Neil deGrasse Tyson

Well said my friend! I only add, do not let the stories of the past slip from us now. There are very few Vets from WWII left for us to praise today, so please visit some of these heros. (and dont forget the woman of the war too! Many are the times I have seen people have Vets into our school for presentations, yet there was no representation of the Woman of the war. I know two woman, one was a Seargent (and later a drill seargent) and one was a Triage Nurse, both of whom were fonts of stories and insights beyond anything you could imagine.) Even if you can not find someone who was in the war, there are many who were growing up in those awful times that can pass on their memories and knowledge of that time of strife. If you have a youth (I did this with my son, who was 12 at the time) bring them with you and talk to some of these people and listen to what they have to say. They most certainly will enjoy the attention, and our children can learn so much from them, things that aren't in any text book!

Yup, my grandma was a nurse in WWII. I only wish I had known her longer than I did to ask about her experiences. Maybe get some German language tips too
