Wouldn't be too difficult to make, but I'm seeing the possibilities... and it would also be very helpful on the titan waves (as long as the projectiles that hit it disappear, rocks would be much easier to deal with.
The shield's base would be planted by the Mechanic, and then Link Gunned. There would be a few levels of shield, up to five, and every two seconds LGing it would put it up to the next level (which would be a different color), and add X amount of health. The amount of levels the Mechanic can build up to, along with the amount of Health per level, would be determined by corresponding abilities.
What may wish to be done is giving each level an amount of damage reduction, say, 40 per level or something, so it would be progressively easier to destroy a shield as you knocked down each level.
The shield's health would be displayed like a vehicles, showing the current level's health.
Another idea: shield health regeneration. Identical to normal regeneration, but it only heals up to that level; it needs a mechanic to nurse its levels back up.
Ah man, for such a simple idea, that was a lot. Thanks for giving me the creativity boost .

Of course you can do levels like anything else, and like RTS games, the first level of engineer can only do simple rock walls maybe, next level do maybe structured log/wood walls, then masonary, lastly plasma shielded walls.

1. It's 'masonry'.
2. You skipped metal.
3. This is getting off-topic.

heh, not that I'm upset but I don't give a hoot what I've misspelled I don't use my spell check all the time and I've had sooo much masonry in the family I really don't care that you nitpick.
At any rate I was just giving an idea as how to progress thinking of what type of graphics UT had and how it might be easier using the basics, although I'm not the expert in that area anyway.
This is not really getting off topic as we were, I thought, talking about the engineer class.

Topic: Sentinels. Last I knew, didn't include walls. I may have missed something.
You could have the idea of a sentinel projecting a shield, but it's unlikely you'd have a shield being projected that was anything other than energy. So in the sense that a sentinel (or some other controller) projects a shield, that would be on topic.
In this vein, any opposing "team" (monsters or other) could have two options: take out the shield by pounding on it (I envision this taking a while) or find a way around the shield and take out the projector/sentinel (which I would guess would be fairly easy).
Any other kind of engineer developed barrier would be best posted in its own thread.

This sort of sentinel already exists on other servers, and it produces the paladin shield whenever enemies (albeit human ones, this is a VCTF server I'm thinking of) get too close.
So it wouldn't be the first time the idea would be implemented

Is it that spherical shield or an actual reproduction of the Paladin's?

Paladin shield, same size and color. It looks kind of odd coming out of the little sentinel model.
