Has anyone had any sata drive problems, especially in the area of the sata cable going bad?

I have had several instances where the cable has come loose from one of the ends. I pitched the old cable and bought a new one, but now I'm starting to have problems again.

Never had a problem like that (partly because my hard drives slide into pretty little bays... obviously still have a cable but more idiot [echo] proof). Have you considered taping them down?

The hd is in a bay, and screwed in tight, as it is supposed to be. It just seems that the cable comes loose from either the hd or the board. Sometimes it's the hd end and other times, it's the board end. no rhyme or reason. The pc is never moved, except when I have to go inside.

I take the pc cover off and re-plug both ends back in and I'm fine. How would you tape that cable end?

My HD's aren't fitted in the tradition PC sense (I have a mac... with serial ata), so the process of exchanging them is simplified, but anyways back to the topic.

Are the cables long enough? Seems to me I had that problem a long long time ago. If so, it's probably the fit of your HD and logic board connectors. I guess you'd have to attach small amounts of tape around the edges of the connector/cable on each end. That's the only way I could think of. Hopefully someone else has a cleaner solution.

It sounds like there's some excessive vibration in your system. Check to see if your case fans are bolted down hard. Another possibility: the "bump" on the connector that makes the cable click in when you insert it might be worn or defective.

I agree with Moof. I would rule out thermal expansion and may have defective connections or a vibration issue.

I have a SATA WD Raptor and have no issuses. I know the latest standard for SATA has slightly differnt ends, I beleive, to address this issue, if I remember correctly. But I'm not 100% positive.

Thanks for the suggestions and thoughts. As you give me the suggestions to check, I have gone in and looked. Please keep them coming.

I've checked the fans-all are securely mounted and no vibration (hand on the fan case test). My pc is a little over 2 years old, so age shouldn't be an issue (I hope). However, the old cable was 12" long and the new one is 8" long, but the distance from hd to board is 4", so the length shouldn't matter.

Thermal wise, no problems, I have the thermal limits set low in the bios.

Try a hot glue gun to secure the cable.

I'm with Llach on this one. Use a minimal amount of glue and it's even removable if you're careful.

I say yea to the glue theory too, just make sure you use the low-temp type. The high-temp (mostly industial use) stuff can(I've done it) melt wire jackets.
