First I am no expert in UT2K4, but I have been around for sometime and thought it would be useful for a guide on the Translocator.
Feel free to add your comments.
The translocator is a useful tool in Invasion which will teleport you to your disc away from the monsters (usually). So the first area to think about is were to place the trans. If your new to the map, I would recommend spending the time up front to find a safe spot (before it gets ugly).
So What Is A Safe Spot?
1). Usually a place high in the map were you will not get squished by a Titan.
2). A small area that the monsters can not get to you easily.
3). A place that has a lot of health. (remember if your in trouble, trans back to your safe spot).
4). A place that is considered "out of bounds" which would be simlar to #2.
When Placing:
1). Do not place your trans very close to other players trans. If you teleport back and someone is standing on your disc, you die.
2). When trhowing the trans, it can bounce and I would recommend that for beginners you make sure you trans lands were you want. There are times that you think you put it in a corner, but it bounces down into a main area.
3). If you have a mine layer and you will not be using it in the game, then I would recommend placing 2 mines around your disc. Remember to come back later in between waves to place more mines.
Checking Your Trans:
1). In between waves, I trie to check my trans to confirm that it is not broke. You can do this by switching to the trans and pressing the button to view (mine is the space bar). You should see your disc. If it is sparking, do not trans back. You can use this camera to remember were you placed the trans (sometimes I forget, lol).
2). If it is a broken trans, you will need to find it and walk over the top of it to repair it.
3). If you find your trans is broken a lot, then that is not a good spot to place the trans. I would base it on how many waves did your trans make it before it was broke? If it lasted 6 waves or less then I would move it. Anything more then that, then I would keep it in that same spot.
Additional Information:
1). If you are being attacked by a queen and you trans back to your spot, most of the time the queen will teleport back to your area also. If you are being attacked by a queen. Trans back, place a new Trans in the same spot and run. You usually will only have 2 seconds to get out of there.
2). You may notice that when you are thowing the trans it disappears. The reason for this is because it is in an area you can not trans to. Place your trans someplace else.
3). Do not hang around the area that you place the trans. Remember the trans is for an emergency ditch and if you place the trans close to were you are shooting, then it usually does you no good. I try to place a trans on the opposite side of were I will be killing the monsters. The theory is that if I trans back, then it is because I am deep trouble because there are way to many monsters in the area. By using the trans, you will end up as far away from the monsters as possible (usually).
4). Understand were you are killing the monsters. Are there other players trans disc's in the area? Just make sure that you are not standing on one of them or running in the area for a long period. We do not want to kill our teamates.
5). A cool trick is if you need to fire a super weapon off in a tight area that normally you would either die because of the close range or take a large amount of damage, then use the trans as a tool. Fire the super weapon and trans back. You need to make sure you have enough time to trans back. (do not fire a super weapon at your feet and think you will have enough time to trans back).
6). Think outside of the box when placing your trans. Maybe a high wire is better then a tight spot?
7). Try to remember at all times were your trans is. There are times I forget that I placed the disc it on a small rock towards the top of the map. Instead of going back to my safe spot and stopping, I trans back to the place and keep on running. (it stinks when you forget were your trans is and you trans back and then fall off of something because you are moving).
. Use your trans as a way to get into the action. If you know were your trans is, and you see monsters in the area (not right on top!) and you have full health, trans back to that area to start killing monsters. I have been on the other side of the map wondering were all the monsters are and realized that they were by my disc area and by getting back quickly I killed a few monsters.
9). If you have trouble with throwing the trans into tough areas then practice, practice, practice. For starters you may find if you are using the trans to get up to a platform, it is easier to bounce it off a wall instead of trying to hit the platform on the first try. Other ways to get to your area that you want to place your trans is by throwing the disc to a closer area and getting to that spot in the map and then trying to throw your trans from there.
10). If you see a disc sparking, it is recommended that you tell the other players by either voice chat or text chat. You want to say "Broken trans by ?????". Remember you are trying describe the location. If there is a blue/red side, then make sure that you say which side that you are on.
11). You can use teleport to kill monsters. If they are standing on your disc then teleport back and the monster will die. I will not go into this because honestly I am not the best at killing them this way.
12). You should have your trans placement by the end of wave 5. Wave 6 is Titans and you sure do not want to be caught off guard without placing your trans by this wave.
13). If you are by your trans disc and you get attacked, then bail. Start using the trans to get out of there. After the monsters have died, then go back and place your trans again.
So Whats Next?
Follow the guide and practice, practice, practice. When you are done practicing, you will need to re-learn how to throw a trans in low gravity. That is a bit tricky.
I hope this guide has helped you.

Excellent guide, should prove useful.
It wasn't mentioned, probably because it's well known, but the hotkey for the trans is Q. It's good to map that to a mouse key for very easy access.

I'm personally much more fond of using the trans all the time. Now that's coming from my playing of bombing run where people transed everywere to get about faster.
I hardly ever use it in just one spot and leave it there, I think its's much more useful to allow you to telefrag and to move around the map faster. Now while this does have disadvantages if you get cornered, that is hopefully avoidable to your fast enough with it. The queens still seem good at pinning you against the wall though.

Something that I would say as a warning for trans use.
Dont leave it somewhere that cannot be reached without using it. If it breaks (for whatever reason) and you have no way of getting to it, your stuck till you die. I do not know if it resets if you Ghost, but I'm thinking it does, so you get a second chance with that along with life. Once I lost my trans at the bottom of a slime pit for the entire match. I think I finally ghosted on wave 16 but I was without the use of it until then. I could have transed and killed myself at the and of a wave, if I had thought of it... but I didnt.
Other than that, it's a good guide.

Very nice guide for the Translocator. I prefer to lay down the trans in waves 11, 12, 14, and 16. Leaving your trans in one spot is a good idea, but the versatility of your trans is something that is often overlooked. Rather than leave it in one spot for a long period of the match, try using it. When the heavier waves come on, just set your trans in a spot that you know you will be able to get back to later on.
Other than that, the other use I have for the trans is using it as a type of scouter. What I mean is that I fire the trans high into the air, switch into camera mode and move the camera around to get a visual of what kind of monsters are around me. It also gives me a good positioning of where I am on the map since I am not a very good navigator. The trans has been very useful for me and will continue to be useful in it's versatility.

Yes I forgot about using it to view the map from above. Good suggestion.
