Steve Irwin, the snake-wrangling Aussie wildlife enthusiast died today after his heart was pierced by a stingray's poisonous barb.
He was working on a shoot in the Barrier Reef at the time. Some may have thought he was funny and entertaining, and some may have thought he was annoying. He was over the top, but I enjoyed his energy and was often amazed at his ability to remain calm in many extremely dangerous situations.
He leaves behind a wife and two small children.

I was pretty sad to read about his death this morning. He was very entertaining and helped greatly in environmental protection. He will be missed.

I read the news last night on yahoo in disbelief, at first I thought I had mis-read it. Steve was one of my heroes and I enjoyed watching him and Terri share thier lives and passions with us. He will be missed greatly

Often, during his life, I made comments/jokes with friends about how incredibly insane he seemed.
But, in memoriam, I suppose he was a man much like myself: deeply passionate about a cause, and wiling to make unusual sacrifices to follow it.
There's no question as to how much his "insanity" helped awareness and preservaion of wildlife. He was a valuable man to humanity.

He certainly, at the very least, could keep me entertained.
He will be missed.

This was absolutely inevitable. What a crying shame. He was the face of the modern conservation movement and had passion for his work that most will never know. My thoughts are certainly with his family and friends. Discovery Channel has already renamed the gardens in front of their corporate offices after him and are talking about putting together a Steve Irwin Memorial fund to help promote wildlife conservation. I for one will be glad to shell out for that charity. What a loss for nature.

You're right, he will be missed.
He reminds me of the stories I read as a child regarding King Solomon who had knowleged of everything that creeps and crawls. The difference is that you don't have to travel to hear as you did with Solomon. Steve came to our living rooms.
He was able to educate the ignorant of the world by hightening awareness of our surroundings. His death is a great loss.

I couldn't believe that Steve was killed by a Sting Ray. When I heard about it from my Mom, I thought it was inconceivable. I mean this guy has dealt with Crocodiles that were well over 3 times Steve's size. It's sad that he's gone. No one is ever going to be able to replace him. This guy was very passionate and serious about his job. Steve was my hero when it came to Zoology and Animal Conservation. I hope that his family will be able to get through this. I salute Steve Irwin and his contributions.

Interesting fact I heard today was only 17 people have been killed by sting rays in the last 200 years. What luck that is to die from a sting ray.

He will surely be missed. I heard that the video of his death will be played on television... I don't know how many people will be able to watch it.

Egh. That would be distasteful at best. The video of his death is something that's out there on the 'net for those who wish to see it, whether out of morbid curiousity or simply seeing it for themselves. As I said before, I found the dude to be totally crazy (and I loved him for it), but in retrospect he did such an incredible amount toward education and preservation. I think that's why his loss struck a chord with so many people.
