Portal is an upcoming game from Valve Software (publishers of the Half Life series). It's apparently going to be released as a free bonus for Half Life 2: Episode 2, due out this fall.
It's classified as a Puzzler-FPS hybrid game. Here's the trailer video at Youtube.
From the Ars Technica critique:
"That video makes my brain hurt in all the right ways. The set up and voice-over are both hilarious, and at first it seemed rudimentary to me. Then everything goes crazy and you start to realize just how much you can do with this technology."

As interesting as Portal seems, all I can say is:
TEAM FORTRESS 2!! TEAM FORTRESS 2!! TEAM FORTRESS 2!!
But they'll both be released along with HL2's episode 2 unfortunately.. and I'm not a fan of episodic content. Oh well, I suppose I'll be putting down the cash, even if just for TF2.

I'll never buy another game from valve after that monstrosity Steam. What a pain, a huge resource hog and basically overbearing Steaming pile of 1's and 0's. Never again.

Agreed totally. I have never had so many problems with a piece of software before. If i had to document all the problems I've had with Steam, it would look something like a dictionary or phone book.

It's only using 4 megs of ram and 0 CPU for me...
Give it another shot? They've improved it immensely. If you don't own any Valve games, you can use it to download the fullscreen version of the Portal trailer under Media or somethin'.
(P.S.: Make sure you don't have PeerGuardian running.)

Fun fact: Portal comes from a Digipen project called Narbacular Drop. Valve saw the project and hired the team to apply it to the Source engine.
No time to link, but Google "Narbacular Drop" and you can find the site. It's the same idea as Portal, so you can get an idea of what to expect.

(minor topic revive here)
There is a similar kind of thing that has been coded for UT2k4 - though it's not nearly as neat, clean, and awesome. Just a portal gun, which creates a sort of warp between the two places, like this. And you can shoot through it. It operates in pretty much the same way, although generally causes intense graphical lag after a few minutes.
Awesome none-the-less.
