If you'd like to discuss what I've written (offer suggestions, corrections, tell me I shouldn't have done it), this is probably a good place to do it, so that it doesn't happen in the original post.

FYI: There's a tinyurl for it at:

http://tinyurl.com/lz229

That should be easier to remember and type in if a newbie shows up and needs to be pointed there.

A nice start to something that coul really help some peeps out bot! If I may suggest something? I know there are a lot of really good threads out there in this forum about all manner of stuff, mayhapse you could make a post directing people to those with links? It may help keep your fingers from bleeding trying to write everything down.

Well you'll notice I did that with the "where do I spend points" post - I was aware of the posts covering that.

I of course will provide links when the information fits in - did I miss something in particular that you'd like to see?

Ug - I think Dru or Shan has indicated that it wasn't a good idea.

The post has been deleted.

No email or PM about it ... just plain toasted.

Okay - I've gotten approval from Dru to put the FAQ back up, providing I avoid making opinion seem like rules (in other words, if there's opinion in there, I need to minimize it and make it clear that it's opinion and not a "rule"). One thing the FAQ should not be (and I agree) is an "ethics" thread. There may have been an issue with a mod/admin not liking the fact that I broke it up into several different posts - it may have appeared that I was trying to keep the FAQ at the top of the list by replying to it.

Honestly, I was just trying to break it up a bit to make it easier to read. I was pretty much done with it when it was toasted ...

So, if I do get around to putting the FAQ back together, here's my plan:

  • I'm going to read this thread quite a bit before I do to make sure everyone's opinion on what should be in the FAQ has been at least given a once over

  • My initial post will be just a single post; all FAQ items I include will be posted there (unless I discover a length limitation - mod/admins, I'd welcome some feedback on this potential issue) and that will be the post I maintain - IE, I'll edit that post, rather than post replies EDIT: What I will probably do now that I think about it is format a multipost FAQ off line first, read it over, maybe have an off forum link to it here to allow for feedback, and then post it when it's stabilized.

  • One of the final items in the FAQ will be a link to this post, where I would prefer discussion/corrections to be posted. As per Dru's PM to me, the forums provide a great peer review ability. I welcome input into the FAQ from others but I'd want to avoid a 20 page thread with a series of contradictions, discussions, debates, as it should be an easy thread for newbies to read.

Quick note - I've got my rough draft up at:

    http://scuba.lib.usf.edu/dc/faq.php

Note that it's only a rough draft and even post 1 is missing some stuff (posts are indicated by the table borders). Already I'm thinking about rewriting some stuff or moving some stuff around (as I've suddenly realized I've forgotten a few key items).

Really, it's a matter of me playing a little bit and hearing the frequency of the frequently asked questions.

If this topic at all interests you, one way or the other, please: provide feedback as the rough draft develops. If you don't want to post it here, PM me - I check that more frequently than I do email, after work.

Finally, I'll be working on it on and off over the next couple of days (particularly since the tendonitis/mouser's thumb has been acting up). I'm hoping to have it "rebuilt" to something vaguely resembling what it was like before it was deleted by Friday ...

I'm pretty much done (I think) with the Rough Draft at the above URL. I'd like to get some feed back on it from a few people before I post it to the Forums for it's use. An admin's feedback would be most welcome! Thanks!

Note that it won't 100% look identical to the web page above. While I've written the things in BBCode and have a PHP function available that translates bbcode to html, that translation isn't exactly the same (most notably for font sizes) as the translation done on the forums.

Hey 320 - I've taken the VINV map item out as per your request .. though it was based on a question I've heard at least twice, and one of those times I think it was Chyster that answered it.

But yeah, I dropped it as it *was* a bit too much opinion.

Looks good to me...pretty straight forward. But it's guaranteed that someone out there won't understand it

The only thing I saw (and it's a VERY MINOR detail) is that when you start a new character and it's already at Level 5, you only have 28 stat points, not 35.

If you want to change that or not it's up to you Bot, just thought I'd let you know

I must say that there are many who would wish for this to be the case, but, it is not against the rules to map vote at any time during the game, including wave sixteen (no matter how much of an inconvenience it may seem).

I quote one of the co-owners from administrative behind-the-scenes dialogs and debates in an instance where administrative attempts were made to try to stop people from doing this.

    Shantara wrote:

Just a reminder, there is no rule against mid-game voting. Please do not instruct players not to vote mid-game.

Wave sixteen was included in that discussion and was ultimately included in the ruling.

I would replace the part where you wrote about this (last one I believe that contains "except on wave 16") with something else. If you wrote along the lines of the paragraph below, I think you'll be alright. It is a mixture of Dru's posted thoughts in the same above mentioned discussion, some mine, and some from others.

If you map vote on wave sixteen, and somehow get enough premature votes to change maps before the wave is completed, you (and everyone else on the server) lose out on the bonus stat points that would be awarded for completing the map. Also, it can cause others to become rather upset especially if they think they have a chance of finishing the last wave. Though it is not against the rules to map vote at any time during the game, voting too soon on wave 16 can cause hard feelings.

However, I must say that other than the above instance, everything looks a whole lot better than it did before. It doesn't even look like the same post. If you clear up the map vote issue, you'll have my vote.

    Suggestion:
I would also consider cutting the header font size to, at the very least, half of what you have now. Huge font sizes like that are screaming out to the reader "YOU ARE STOOPID". Besides, no one playing this game is blind and changing this could help some people from getting that way.

Here is some info for an advise section for the noob post. You don't have to include it, but it would be nice if you did. If you do include it, it should be dead last so the reader gets the meat and potatoes before the ice cream.

Watch - Look - Listen - Be Patient

Watching (observing) other players when you are dead can be beneficial. Depending on who you observe, you'll learn where to go, what to use and a whole lot of tips and tricks on how to stay alive. Remember, every player has a unique style that can be learned from (yes even a noob).

Look around and memorize maps. If your new to the game or to a particular map, you'll need to remember where the weapons, ammo, health, adrenalin, etc. are to get you back to fragging monsters fast.

Listen to how others talk to each other. You'll learn what is acceptable and what is not. Also, listen to what they are saying. Most of the time somebody somewhere is passing out an awesome weapon or could be giving up a charm.

The best is last. Be patient!! No one here learned everything they need to know in one game, one hour or one day. It takes time to learn all the cool stuff that you can do on the DC server and it definately cannot be covered indepth in an FAQ. If you tried, it would be huge. Read through the forums, catch up with what has happened in the past, get to know people and let them get to know you.

    Font sizes:

    Big=18 "Normal"=12 Font 14 14 bold? Current=16

I guess I could switch the questions around from using a bigger font size to just using bold. As per the samples above, I'm using something between "Big" and "Normal" already. For me, the "Big" wasn't that big, and "16" doesn't have any "bold" features. I'll play with it later today and see if I can "boldify" something just above normal - like bold 13 or 14. I cut it from 18 to 16 at 320's behest ...

Unless you were looking at an earlier version where I was using 18 and 16 looks okay to you ... I wonder if this is a browser issue? But it looks fine at 16 for both IE and Firefox for me ...

EDIT: I've switched to bold+14. That small enough for people?

    Mid-game voting

I'll rework the language sometime today to be sure. I was of course working off of dated information here, where I overheard an admin (IIRC, which isn't always the case) I think say it was illegal.

EDIT: Done - I think it's neutral enough, while still pointing out the issue with voting during 16.

    Noob advice

If I don't put your stuff in expressly, I'll try to find a way to link an item to the "Strategy and Tactics" thread 320 has - and probably quote what you say above, if it's not already there. This I'll have to ruminate on. I fancy myself a writer (though I haven't finished my book yet - darn UT2004!) and I like to have (if possible) a certain kind of flow ).

EDIT: In as a direct quote.

    320's post

(320 and I discussed this so it's not like I'm asking for this without his permission) ... if it's possible to remove a single post, could someone remove 320's from the FAQ? Or, at the very least, 320, when you get a chance, can you remove the text from your post?
