For about two months now, I have been playing UT2004 with the music off (the sounds are still on, of course). I use the in-game music player so I can play some mp3s (or I'll have Winamp on in the background if I want to play something in another format). Does anyone else do this?
I find I play a little harder if I am listening to something like Clint Mansell & Kronos Quartet or Das EFX :3

Nope...I've tried it but the in game music fits the mood and the atmosphere more so I leave it on. Playing my own just doesn't seem right to me...

I used to play UT exclusively with the game music turned off and winamp in the background. Now I just play it with the music off period so I can hear everyone. Polls would be nice but they can be a real hassle.

My brother plays with his winamp running and I play at the same time so often that I've just got the music turned off all the time. It lets me hear people better and it solves the competeing music issue when he's here

I've tried playing music in the background, but found myself consentrating on the music instead of what people were saying. I just use UT's music now.

I used to play music while playing (GreenDay, Korn, or 80's music), but then I stopped. I just listen to the ingame stuff and other people talking.

I plug my mp3 player (Creative Nomad Zen Extra) into the auxilary port of my speakers. Doing that I can control volume, tracks ect without having to pull up any menus also it doesnt take any HD,RAM, or Processing away from the game and it eliminates the annoying mute or whatever happens when people are using voice chat.

About not being able to hear everyone... I don't know why people complain. Whenever someone talks, it turns down all of the other sounds for me, so I can hear them. Unless maybe you have the music up too loud, or maybe there's an option somewhere to turn that on and off..

Well, if you use the in-game player, it acts like the regular music and turns it down a bit whenever someone uses VOIP...

I used to keep the music off (holdover from playing 1v1 and deathmatch.) But since I've been playing Invasion, I've started listening to music since it's already noisy.
I was using winamp in the background, but I occasionally play windowed, and for some reason having winamp open kills the framerate. So, I just use the in-game mp3 player. I like it better since I can control it in-game without having to alt-tab or anything. I'm pretty sure the mp3 player can play .OGG files, too. That's what the game's music is encoded in.
As for what I listen to: right now it's just been Mindless Self Indulgence's new album "You'll Rebel to Anything..." and Mega Man II remixes ( Project X = good stuff.) If you see me jumping around mindlessly, I'm probably rocking to "Shut Me Up"
I'll grant the game music has an advantage of being able to change to fit the game. IE music picks up when you're fighting, lets up when you've killed them all.
