LOVED the otherland series, still one of my all time favs. He has a couple fantasy series that I would recommend as well!

Also recommended, Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, and The Diamond Age, also by Stephenson.

Finally, read Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman. Brilliant, deliciously twisted dark fantasy book!

As for myself, I'm currently listening to the Song of Ice and Fire series. I have a good commute so I fill the space with some great books! It is not a series for the feint of heart tho. Brutal in every aspect. (The miniseries is exclusive to HBO, if that says anything). But, it is also brilliantly written imho. A ton of complex characters & storylines, diverse cultures and lands, and fantastic creatures to boot! If you opt for the audiobooks, make sure you get the ones read by Roy Dotrice. They had some other guy read a few of the books and he's terrible. Anyway, on the 3rd book and loving it!

Hamish: "Your island"? You mean Ireland?
Stephen: Yeah. It's mine.
Hamish: You're a madman.
Stephen: I've come to the right place then!

Oh, you know, pulled a Hussein. Dug a hole, hibernated for a while, nothing terribly glamorous.

Did I miss much excitement in my absence?

I started re-reading the Wheel of Time series again to prepare for the last book coming out this fall.

dom - corrosion may be causing something in the LED circuit to be connected on the circuit board.

Like wombaT, my comute is pretty good, so I have been listening to books. First book I ever listened to and still my favorite is the LoTR trilogy read by Rob Inglis. Rob is a master of voices and will always be the voice of Gandolf to me. I have probably listened to all 48 discs more than a dozen times, especially the Annals of the Kings and Rulers at the end.

At first I thought that I was ruining the pure art of writing by listening to instead of reading the author's long efforts to get their ideas into written word, but then I thought about it and verbal storytelling is how storytelling started in the first place. So I rationalize it by saying that I am just going back to the way it used to be.

Read the Dragon Tattoo Lady trilogy and the Hunger Games trilogy. Of the 2, I enjoyed the Hunger Games more.

I have also become entranced by Kim Harrison's fantasy series based in Cincinnati about a witch, a vampire and a pixie that fight bad guys. At first I was just lured in by the strong female lead character Rachel (aka Lizbeth in Dragon Tattoo and Katniss in Hunger Games), but the characters really grew on me. Rachel is the witch with a heart of gold that can never catch a break. Kim does a great job of fleshing out a world very similar to ours, but with a few big differences. Again, the reader was a crucial part of my enthrallment. Marguarite Gavin is the excellent story teller that keeps me listening. They threw in another reader on one of the middle books and I had to struggle through it.

One of my favorite surprises was I, Sniper by Stephen Hunter. One of his books was the basis of the recent sniper movie with Mark Wahlberg. The reader, Buck Schirner, perfectly captures the steely toughness of the ex Marine sniper Bob Lee Swagger.

My dream would be to get Isaac Asimov's stuff in audio form but I have not found them anywhere. Asimov's stories were my original favorites growing up and will always hold a special place on my bookshelf, even if I don't have time to read them.

Mine too--as soon as I have the money, I will start collecting his books.
