yikes I seem to have this problem on my secondary CPU (my sons)
no simpler ways to accomplish this ?
dang I may just have to try to fix , or spend the $100 to buy a new HD
thanks for posting the link Greg

If you have any questions let me know.
See if Spacey can get you those jumpers. Soldering wires to the pins is kind of cumbersome.

I think the usb data cable is a nicer way to go. If you can find a phone data cable, it should work. You can find pinouts for a bunch of them on http://pinouts.ru/ The cable I had wasn't listed though, but I was able to open it and google the IC in it to get a pinout of the chip. Then I just traced the pcb to the correct wires. (A multimeter is handy for this)
Once you find the TX and RX wires, you can connect them together and open the terminal and you should be able to see what you type.

Also my first attempt was adding some gibberish on the terminal, so I used a third pin for ground. I think the how-to doesn't mention using a ground because they used the computer power supply which has the same ground as the serial connection. I used an external drive enclosure power supply so I didn't get that benefit.

I used a piece of paper to insulate the connection to the spindle motor during the spin down procedure. It is much easier that way then trying to put screws in while powered on.

I'll try and get some pictures of my setup.

before i get started my first concern is powering the HD can I put my cases side by side and use the SATA power cable from the other CPU to power it

my HDD is the 7200.10 will the commands be the same as the 7200.11 ?

thanks again

EDIT upon closer inspection this HD ST3250820AS does not have a firmware update well at least it was the old CPU and I got most everything off of it already

I don't see any problem with it...It may be easier to take the drive out though.

It might be worth a shot...What do you have to loose?
I haven't updated my firmware still. The drive sits powered off most of the time, so I am not worried just yet. I have the only sata computer in my house, and I don't have a need for a second internal drive.

I think I may still give it a shot
I installed Vista on an older drive so my son does have a CPU to use for now
it would be nice to get the other working though , and now I don't have to rush

You may want to check the warranty on it and just see if they will send a replacement

15 minutes ago, my 500gb seagate died with a series of squeaks squeals and clicks. Good news was that it was only my backup drive.
It sounded much like the click of death except for the chirping noises...this is my first SATA drive to fail, so I guess it has something to do with that.
I noticed a couple of abnormal chirps about an hour ago, did a SMART test and everything was fine. Then I got a SMART warning stating imminent failure (new feature in ubuntu), and the reallocated sector count jumped to 16,000, then the drive started to sing, and became unresponsive.

The drive was only powered on for 110 days.
Just bringing this up because I got very little warning before the drive failed. And this could happen to anyone.
The drive is still under warranty, but I will need to setup a new backup drive.

thanks for the warning ,after some research my other HD is a paperweight apparently (think it overheated)
makes no noise doesn't power up
for everyone else give your CPU lots of air my Son's was in a little side compartment on the desk and got really warm apparently , so I moved it too late apparently

110 days !! uh are you sure you weren't just torture testing it

ummm road you mean HDD don't you?? since this is a tread about HDD's

now my 1st HDD was a seagate 200 or 250 mb unite ..had files stert to turn up missing, come to find out that seagate had issues with scandisk in dos 6.1 or.2 and it made files vanish!

well after that I've used nothing but maxtor drives and I've had basically no probs with them. the few WD's that I've had ,have been ok altho the 1.2g drive in 1 of the kids puters just started to have the controller issue where ya here the arms going click click real loud so I just pulled it and now I gotta reload games back on fer the kid but I need to upgrade their comps or find 2 PCI vid cards with at least 64mb for their color drawing tablets they got for x-mas. tis the life I lead

I may be getting old and falling apart but I can sure can raise Hell and have fun doing it!

interesting--only hard drive I've lost was a Seagate Barracuda 300gb. I've yet to lose a WD hard drive. BTW, Seagate and Maxtor are the same company.

My first hd was 40mb don't remember the brand though...it was more than a couple of years.

I have had plenty of maxtors fail. But I have only had failure hurt me. I just moved from California and after my drive failed, I realized I lost my backup disks during the move. I still have the drive, and every now and then I can still recover a picture from it here and there. I think the drive failure was triggered by a memory leak that caused the harddrive to trash for hours as windows paged memory to the swapfile.

For those without a backup solution, and are tight on $. There are online storage sites that will give you free storage.
Dropbox and spideroak will both give you 2g free.
I like spideroak's program.
