No, I dived with nitrogen/oxygen mixture but this was in the late 60's. Bot, what are you using as a mix?

Straight air is around 79% N2, 21% O2 (or something like 78% N2, 21% O2, and 1% trace other gasses). Depending on target depth, I usually dive anywhere from 32-36% O2 (the balance being N2 - this is considered "Nitrox diving" ). However, going too deep with higher percentages of O2 can be dangerous and Nitrox diving shouldn't be done without proper certification (and diving in general should never be done without the proper certification).

"Technical" diving (which in strict terms usually means diving with multiple mixes of gas, IOW, two different tanks with different mixes, or possibly with "planned" decompression stops), usually to greater depths (like 200ft+) can involve mixes of O2 that are considered hypoxic on the surface (< 21%), and the N2 is cut heavily with Helium (as Nitrogen is not your friend as a diver). This is also called "Trimix diving". I am not Trimix or Technical certified.

To explain it any further would get really technical and border on teaching you "Nitrox Diving".

"Recreational diving" is usually defined as "no decompression diving" (meaning if you do any stops before your surface, they are called "safety stops" and not "planned decompression stops"), and is typically limited to 130 feet in depth (and it is usually suggested that you take a "deep diving" class before breaking 60-70 feet).

It's a naturally occuring chemical that replenishes the ozone layer--in large contractions, it can be poisonous to people.

A cursory search on Google shows some debate about Ozone being poisonous.

However, it's never used in SCUBA anyway, so don't worry about it. Tanks are most commonly filled with straight (possibly filtered) air, and typically cut with medical grade O2 for Nitrox mixes.

And as noted, holding your breath is a problem when you dive - if you fill your lungs at depth, hold your breath, and then head to the surface, you can experience an over-expansion injury.

I can't see this happening to a snorkler or free-diver though.

However, rule #1 for me is "Don't Panic."

Very true. Most deaths related to diving nowadays comes from panic, solo diving in depths over 75 feet, and diving on wrecks where you can lose your way. The Andrea Dora is a prime example of unnecessary deaths due to going inside of the ship.

but technically you dont go in the wrecks unless you have right certifaction
ie you shouldnt if you just have open water certiafiction..(ps yes i said the lung thing bcus of the whole expansion of air stuff...thus " plooey" ..thou its more repturing than plooey.)

and it doesnt happen to snokeler unelss they soem how breath in air at a depth then rose again hold that breath whch wiht the reduced pressure means increased volume la de da...

this is true.....which is probably why you get those really weird warning labels on things nowadays such as on a 5 in looong fishing hook "do not attempt to swallow"...o.0...but then again thats not relevant..

Hey Griz,

Glad you had a nice vacation, and very sorry to hear about your grandmother. I lost my Grandfather back in 86, Mom in 95, her next-older sister, Jean, in 96, and her youngest sister, Patricia/Sue, in 98. Add to that the fact that I am a 30+ year survivor (for those of you who do the math, yes, I am a juvenile cancer survivor... bladder tumor), and is one of the things that strikes at me quite deeply. Given that the family lived in a valley downwind/downstream from a paper mill (can we say Dioxin) and they used DDT, the doctors are thinking my generation has better than a 25% chance of having a damaged gene. Oh well... just something we all look out for. But I will say a special prayer for you, your grandmother and family.

On the diving, I dove years ago, and really wish I could get recertified. But I would never get to go, esp. given how my wife does not do anything much because of her fibro/lupus... But I have heard that some of the lakes in the Ozarks of AR and MO are wonderful, and that one has a 90ft visibility at 90ft! Drool, even if a bit chilly! LOL There was talk about releases.. I know of some instructors here in the midwest who go the extra step and require a doctors release regardless, just to make sure you do go get a checkup from a doctor telling them that you plan on diving.

Best dive trip... up and down the Atlantic coast one Memorial Day weekend... Went diving with a family friend who was attending OSU and was a Seal. Flew a PBY (may be the same one his dad and mine flew back in WWII) from here in Ohio down to the area off the VA/NC border, then proceded to move on down towards the keys over the next three days, diving right off the plane. He had places he could get his tanks filled (a few were Naval bases... we were breathing a He/O2 based mix, given we were also flying). Loved when we landed at a NAS he was very familiar with... really had folks rubber necking to see a PBY landing on a strip normally used by F-14's LOL).

Oh, and you want claustrophobia... if you are diving, wrecks or caves can make it worse, as can diving in 0-visibility water (I did rescue dives for the local VFD... I will continue to refuse to dive in the rivers down near where I grew up after coming face to mouth with a Muskie who could have swallowed my head and who knows what else whole). Not as bad as doing HazMat and going into small, confined spaces, but...

Well, looks like I'm set. Got an instructor and were going to wait until the winter when the water visibility hits its high in January. I understand that I will need a dry suit no matter what time of year I dive off of Alaska. Mostly here people dive for King crab.

Spacey:

I think that I have an idea what you are talking about. My Grand-pa had a house on the love canal. Every one in my dads generation has had cancer. Dads was skin, uncle has pancreatic, aunt had a tumor. of their cousins many have faced it. Grand-pa and his twin both died of cancer. Grand-ma lost her twin to an accident about 10 years ago.

No sign of the same thing in my generation, but me and my cousins kids are running a high rate of Autism. National average is one in 100 but our average is 1 in 8 (for almost 80 total).
