Zero momentum for friendly fire?

We're pondering concocting a mod that causes no momentum for friendly fire. The idea being you couldn't be blown off edges by teammates, (or flak or shield gun, etc.)

What do you all think about this idea?

I'd like to change my vote from neutral to completely against.

We were talking about this in game this evening, and Chloe had a very, very good point: the forces acting on your character from other players' weapons are part of a map's difficulty.

Intentionally shield gunning another player off a map is not part of this server.

Having a map that's difficult because of terrain is.

Should we eliminate all momentum from friendly fire, it will, with other changes we're making, make the game easy. Way, way, way too easy. Boringly easy.

The low level assistance is enough - perhaps too much already. Medics are going to be powered up in the next version in addition. LA players are going to be doing lots more damage. WM players will eventually get something as well.

We've upped the difficulty level and are now counteracting it piece by piece. Not good.

This is supposed to be a difficult but rewarding server. So let's make it difficult but rewarding!

I think its perfectly fine how it is now. Thier would be no point playing the game if you didnt have a chance to get knocked off a map once an while. Ive maybe been knocked off 1 a month MAYBE. By taking that off, it would only add to the growing list thats making the server a lot more easier. When I first started and who ever else did that time too it was more challengeing. Thier were no medics. The LA players weren't out yet either. So it was what you got when you spawned with. If you didn't like what you got then too bad, look for a Magic Weapon Maker or get used to it.
I used to have a blast (pun intended) when I first started playing. The its not gotten easier just because ve leveled. Many things are contributing to the easiness of the server. So lets make it the was it was, challengeing an fun

I am in complete agreeance. Its starting to take less and less skill to play. If your on a map that people get "blown off" on then the player should make themselves a little more aware and prepare themselves for such incidents. Example: Romra Moon Station. It s a great map to play. Most people don't liken it because it is too small and too, dare I say this, challenging. Setup a trans in a decent spot if you think your going to get knocked off. Hit the crouch key when you see incoming super weapons. Majority of the time this will save you from falling off

You're not suppose to have it easy right off. After all this is an invasion RPG server. The more the player the more you get attributes that help you survive. But the real prize is learning to survive without all these extra rewards. That in-time makes you a better player because you better undestand the concepts of the game. Its has the server not done enough yet to make t easier by throwing all these new "classes" of players, which was a great diea to give the server more variety but now we're just babying the players that don't even understand how hard it use to be.

Changes like the one proposed will continue to throw the idea of a skillful player away and encourage not understanding the concepts of the game. Not to mention kinda a slap in the face of the map creators and why they created the maps, of course that is a whole other discussion...

I understand that players want the difficulty to be challenging. Where I am failing is my understanding of why a player would want to inadvertantly kill another player.

alot of the "don't change it" posts above say (if I understand):

1. I had to live with it so you should too.
2. If you do X (where x= some action) then I won't "accidently" kill you.
3. I do not feel challenged with my high level character? (please note that ?)

To me, thats like saying to some one, well you know, I was going to fire the gun that way, you should have moved dude, sorry about the bullet hole, you should pay attention to which way im pointing it.

It's not that killing another player is a factor in anyone's mind while they're killing monsters.

The problem here is that removing momentum for all friendly fire would remove a significant amount of difficulty from all maps. Even when you don't get knocked off, or aren't even in a map where you could get knocked off, you're almost always being affected by this kind of thing, even when you don't really recognize it as such.

Part of playing UT is controlling your character - and losing that control. If you're fully in control of your character at all times without exception...bleh. Boring.

The very notion that you shouldn't fall off maps where falling off is a significant amount of the difficulty from terrain bothers me, to be entirely honest.

If we were playing another game type invasion on this server then I'd probably say differently. With invasion we end up with 20+ players on the same team and when you put x number of monsters in a level on top of that then have everyone shooting at the same time you will be hit by others shots quite frequently its just unavoidable. If it ends up that this doesn't get implemented please consider it for at least super weapons, recently Ive noticed that there are quite a few who really don't care if they knock someone off a map as long as they get to fire their deemer every round. (not saying anyone is doing it intentionally or anything like that)

IMO its Unreal not CounterStrike

I voted for it but can't say I'd be upset if it doesn't get implemented (although it would be nice if it did)

So, if it doesn't happen very often then whats the problem with implementing it. Monsters are still going to knock players off right. Why not let the monster do it and not the other players.

Players are still going to die. It's not going to make the games any easier. It's just going to eliminate some of the team killing.

Although, I wouldn't mind seeing it go the other way either. Like, take friendly fire off . That sure would be exciting .

I agree with Grizzled. This will impact the difficultly minimally. Beyond Spacenoxx, Romra and Roman Arena which maps do higher level players have any difficulty staying on? I personally can't recall being knocked off by deemers or painters on even these three maps. It's all monster related for me. This mod would help lower level players and this mod shouldn't be discarded because you may think that low level players are getting too much help already.

I want to be able to shoot my painter and deemer off without hesitation.

Monsters knock me off 99% of the time, deemers and painters knocking me off is just annoying and not part of a maps difficulty factor. I'm in the crowd who wouldn't mind the difficulty being notched even higher, but as of now the gameplay is definitly challenging. If you have a full house with plenty of skilled players you will win open maps unless you plan on increasing the difficulty tenfold. On a map like Spacenoxx that is closed in and has the hazard of falling off this mod will make minimal difference in us defeating the map.

The opposition to this mod are higher level players and I'm confident rarely get knocked off maps from deemer or painter shots so why would eliminating such a rare occurence lower the difficulty even noticeably?

You misunderstood me, In an early post I said it happens very rarly. So thiers no point in taking it off.
I think it would
1.) Be a waste of time
2.) Add it to the list of things making the server easier.
3.) Be pointless..

The server used to be "if you don’t like it leave." I liked it so I didn't leave. I started when it was hard, when their weren't medics or LA characters. It was different, more challenging. I don’t like how its gone from that, to change everything that their was to make it easier making a few people happy while making others mad. I think that its perfectly fine the way it was, before all the "adjustments" took place, it had more of a challenge then than it did now....

I think any high level player that makes a new character will have a fairly easy time levelling up. But, I remember playing with my first character and it was extremely difficult. There were no medics, but I doubt that would have changed my perception much. When you are new to the server, the maps and RPG in general taking away things like this friendly fire momentum help. If I was completely new to the server and I saw that level 139 Mach10 deemered me off the map I would not be too pleased and that could play into my decision into staying on the server.

Re:Zero momentum for friendly fire?

I'll voice my opinion on the whole zero momentum weapons. It's really a double edged sword in my opinion. On the one hand you have that extra added security in knowing that you might not get blown back by a weapon like the Redeemer or the Flak. But on the other hand your going to have less difficulty and start to get careless. On the other hand you have that added unknown factor of not telling whether you might knock someone off and taking yourself out with them. Things like this are what make people tread lightly and be more careful on how they fire. I'd rather keep the momentum on weapons because it makes sure your extra careful. Rather than dumbing down the risk and danger of being hit by friendly fire. I admit I dont like when I get knocked off the map or when I knock someone off, but honestly I think that people are more careful when their on a map that they know is difficult. If you were to take the momentum off weapons people could just go crazy and start blasting away with Redeemers and throwing caution to the wind and risk taking some people out if their hit by the deemer.

Planning and trying to prepare ahead is one of the things that makes this server worth playing. Knowing that you cant get careless and watching where you fire is something that I'm sure is in the back of everyone's mind when their playing. What this means is that with the unknown factor, people have to weigh the risks in their mind and see if the whole knocking off your team mate is worth the risk. I know it sounds a bit crazy, but I'd rather have momentum knowing that I tread more carefully and watch where I fire, rather than knowing that the only thing that is able to keep me being knocked off is either A. A monster like a Skaarj, Titan, or Queen or B. By my own fire or by a super weapon.

All in all, it's a mixed bag when you take into account the idea of having Zero Momentum but keeping the momentum. Your going to gain one thing but lose another at the same time.

Re:Zero momentum for friendly fire?

I'm glad to see alot more people thinking about this decision rather than saying, "Hey its something else that won't kill me woohoo!!!" A comment was made earlier about players playing mroe carefully because of the momentum of things such as super weapons. THAT ALONE IS A GREAT POINT!!!

When you have these type of environments it helps a person grow as a player all around. 1: They think about there teammates, GREAT ATTRIBUTE. 2: They begin to actually learn things about the maps rather than just "play" them. 3: They do not get ridiculed by players on other servers because they do something completely obscure that they should have learned a long time ago (yes, some people play other game types other than invasion.)

I keep hearing talk on these boards and in the server, from Admins and Players alike, about wanting to help there players. Then lets stop treating them like children and let them become a better player all around. How about we stop trying to keep changing the GAME'S physics by enforcing such concepts on your already dedicated players and just stick to this being an RPG INVASION SERVER.

After all we are playing Unreal Tournament 2004 before we ever connect into Disastrous Consequences.

Side note, I think a new vote should be put up for those who have changed there mind since reading into these discussions.

Actually, we already have a sturdy weapon. If we implement this in any fashion, we should extend that to zero-damage fire (right now, it works by zeroing momentum in TakeDamage.)

It's hard to make some thing that's "active on just a few maps". It will be active everywhere - it will just have more of an impact (no pun intended) on falling maps.

Some of which we do play quite a bit.

The only class that wouldn't notice would be the medics. My other characters would, probably within a map of playing - especially if we start playing a round of shield gun tag.

Shield and bio jumps on the other hand.. those are good. Would removing momentum on friendly fire disable these?

Re:Zero momentum for friendly fire?

I'm personally for zero momentum on friendly fire explicitly for the reason that it can and has been exploited. I've had about 5 times in the last 3 months where some (unknown) players have purposefully shield-gunned me off of walkways over slime/electricity or dead-falls. I normally don't mind when I'm "moved" to death by a Deemer, but there's been a few times I recognized shield-gunners actually going out of their way to "bump" me off a platform or cliff as I was typing something in chat, or waiting for my health to rise. A couple of times there was nothing and no-one else around, with plenty of room to get by me. Is my skin that monster-like? lol

Another related thing I have a question about... several times in a row on various occasions I've had my Deemer "denied" by an unknown sniper as I was piloting it. Is friendly-fire damage to Deemers possible?

Piper, yes the deemer can be shot at by another player and be "denied." However, it should be a rare occurance when that happens. Normally, what happens is you do not see a monster (usually a Nali) taking aim and suceeding.

Monsters are quite deft at taking down redeemer missiles, especially Nali, Titans, and Warlords.

A more effective way to deal with that situation is to report the player to the admins. If zero-momentum is implemented the players who do that sort of thing will find other ways to annoy you.

Yeah... believe me I would have. The problem is by the time they've accomplished their goal, it's been too late to see their name, and the death message is just something like "Piper took a swim and never came back" or "Piper has left a small crater" or something, heheh. (-;

If it's intentional killing of a fellow player, the admins needs the guilty player's name so we can stop them. Accidents will happen and usually a player will apologize if they realized they killed a fellow player.

I've been killed many times by another player by accident, but I do not remember ever being killed on purpose. However, Shan and Dru will say we are hijacking this thread if we keep on. Just remember to get the player's name and contact the admins on the situation.
