Re:Movie Stuff

When I really think about it, I'd probably class the original George A. Romero Dawn of the Dead as my all time favourite film. I pretty much grew up with it, first with heavily censored UK print, then importing the uncut version from Holland. I now currently own the super deluxe R1 version, although we now get the uncut version here.

In general terms, my favourite are those movies that leave an imprint on the mind due to their subject matter. Be they classics such as Rosemary's Baby and Lawrence of Arabia, or contemporary films such as Donnie Darko or Pi. I also have an obsession with 70's euro-trash - badly made films that just have this charm about them. The works of Jess Franco are particularly appealing.

My DVD collection is rather unhealthy; something along the lines of 800+. These are mostly US imports due to the currency conversion rate and the availability of superior products.

Gotta love the horror flicks of doooooom! Everything from, as said before, Rosemary's baby, Excorsist, Amityville horror, to Evil Dead and Army of Darkness. (all grades A through C like Raw Head Rex and Pumpkin Head :) ) Gore fest's also have their place.
Also like some war movies: Kelly's hero's (kinda funny) Dirty Dozen, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, Heartbreak Ridge, etc...
Mental spirals are cool too... Jacob's Ladder, Dead Again, Silence of the Lambs (though that is horror too. As Well as The Stand)
Sci-fi : Sphere, Abyss, Alien (all), Star Ship Troopers(hilarious flick), really really love sci-fi/horror flick Event Horizone (scared the, ah, stuff out of me)
Adventure too.. Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park (1st and 2nd, didn't really like the third)
Like Pyro said, way too many to count, but here are some of my favorites.

I'm one of those people that just has to see a movie that looks good in the previews, whatever the critics say. My favorite types of movies are sci-fi/action (like I-Robot, Lord of the Rings, Underworld, Spiderman, Hulk, etc.), and comedy/action (like Rush Hour, Legend of Drunken Master, Bad Boys, etc.)
I've seen almost every Jackie Chan movie and all the Will Smith movies (My favorite actors, lol.)

~you gotta love anybody that does there own stunts~

plus some of the animated movies like Shrek, Ice Age, SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (its comedy.... i guess), Shark Tale, etc.

sorry cpl, loved the originals but these new "films" are just terrible. They're like a combination of everything that makes a bad movie bad. Terrible dialog, terrible casting, over CG'd (visually stunning, yes but the realism is totally shot [eg. Yoda]), and they are following up (well, prequel-ing) an epic trilogy, but not fitting the look/feel at all. So yeah, thats just my excuse. :(

The last film I saw of his was Cool World which was somewhat of a mixed bag.

I remember sneaking a copy of Fritz the Cat and C**nskin home after a friend let me borrow his . I lived in mortal fear of my parents catching me with them, particularly as Fritz had become famous around my area as "the sick and twisted cartoon with the cat".

Yep, I forgot to mention the LOTR animation. I fell in love with it as a child, but recent viewings haven't quite captured the same spirit. The use of filmed actors for the Orcs is a rather good touch, and the Smeagol animation seems to have directly inspired Jackson's recent interpretation of him.

Pyro - Fritz isn't purple. He's... well... a very rude cat who smokes too many cigarettes. You won't see him bouncing along during Nick Jr!

To be honest, I have no idea. I was never a fan of Rodney Dangerfield. I looked at the soundtrack on Amazon, but didn't recognize any of the song titles. They could have been in the background. They were in Sixteen Candles at the dance; they were playing Dead Man's Party.

I've just finished a delicious double bill of Trainspotting and Twin Town. I'm not sure if the latter ever reached American soil, but I'm sure the former did. However, it had to be dubbed and subtitled for US audiences as the Scottish accents employed are incredibly thick.

Anyway, these two films are quite personal to me as they're essentially autobiographies of my home town, growing up around the people I did, and the various activities we got up to. As this is a family friendly server, I suggest you look up these films on your own time as both the subject matter and language of these films are quite... well... colourful...

Great story and great acting. Cant believe they made Mickey Rourke look like Ron Pearlman.

Shaun of the Dead

Velvet Goldmine
24hr Party People

Ah, good old Return of the Living Dead!

I'm quite the horror fan too. I seem to appreciate the older works of Fulci and Argento than the modern day 'teen' flicks. Films such as Zombie, Suspiria and Maniac are right up there with my favs.

Wilst on this subject, have you seen the trailer for the fourth zombie film from Romero, Land of the Dead? I don't know about you, but I haven't been this excited about seeing a film for ages!

I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it. I liked Jeff Goldblum's character too! What a cool guy.

So, those are Boingo's feelings for the day.

BTW, CPL, I've been meaning to compliment you on your avatar. That movie killed me.

So, what else do you guys want to recommend for me? Books, too! I'm always looking for a new book to stick my nose in!

Hmm lets see:
Snatch: Got to preview it three days prior to release and bought it first day it cam out. I love british comedy.

12 Monkeys: Gotta give it to brad, he can play an asortment of characters and bruce willis is not too shabby at'tall.

Fight Clucb: again great brad performance and I should also add edward norton is the man. Gotta love that charisma.

Should watch: Seven if you liked 12 monkeys. The Usual Suspects, another great flick: Spacey Del Toro, one of the walberg brothers and many more.

And for people who like to think "What did that movie mean?" : David Linch's first flick "Eraserhead": goodluck fidning that. "Donnie Darko": gotta give Jake Gillenhal some props there. and "Mullholland Drive": another more recent David Linch movie.

While your at it watch "Four Rooms". It will be great relief amongst all these other movies. About a bellhop who visits four "different" rooms of a hotel. Each room has a different theme/story and is direct by a different director. Directors: Allison Anders, Alexandre Rockwell, Robert Rodriguez, and the mighty Quentin Tarantino.
Good dark, odd humor. It's great.

I haven't seen the new Star Wars yet...hopefully, this coming week. And Batman Begins comes out in less than a month! Yay.

I know! Michael Caine will make a great Alfred. I loved him in Miss Congeniality and Secondhand Lions. I need to hurry up and get a freaking Batman shirt. Next paycheck! I got a Batman writstband with my last one. Stupid Hot Topic leather, it still smells like skunk carcass.

Pyro, when is the 4th Harry Potter supposed to be out? I wasn't at all impressed with Prizoner of Azkaban. The director, Alfonso Cuaron, screwed everything up. The grounds were changed, like when they're walking to Hagrid's. The castle is different. I know this wasn't his fault, but the new Dumbledore is horrid. The story felt rushed. I was impressed, however, with the Hippogriff. That part was wicked. And I really liked Lupin. But yeah, if you're going to work on a movie series, keep things the same. Don't change the scenery! I liked Colombus' versions better anyway. It's more of how I pictured it from the book. I've only seen one movie of Mike Newell's (Mona Lisa Smile) which was ok. It was a chick flick, which I'm not really a fan of, but it'll be interesting to see what he did with Goblet of Fire.

And I'm spent....

I once created a 10,000+ word essay on the cultural iconography and interpretation of the underlying meaning inherent within the film's imagery and context. After watching the film twice a day for around two months or so, you do start getting a little strange... Hey, at least I can now look back on it and still admire it for the subversive genius it is. In m eyes, David Lynch cannot go wrong.

Ah yes, let's get back to big bangs and explosions. Star Wars: Episode III was certainly a return to form, but I couldn't help but laugh at a certain section towards the end of the film. I won't give it away to those who haven't seen it, but it happens during the resurrection of Anakin as a certain helmet wearing chap. That aside, the general set-pieces used were superb, although I can't help but feel that Obi-Wan confronting General Grevious could have been better considering the way Grevious is built up throughout the Clone Wars cartoon series.

The last film to really impress me was Sideways - a modern day road movie incorporating that doesn't spiral into gross-out teen comedy or obvious jokes. The characterisations really push the human element of teh film, pushing it almost to be a kind of Thelma & Lousie for the male of the species. Good stuff!

Re:Movie Stuff

Ok, so, I just have to share! Last night, I got all dressed up in my Batman attire and went to see the midnight showing after we got back from dinner for Mumsy's birthday...

Quoth the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons, "Best movie EVER!" Chris Nolan did a great job. It was a lot darker than I was expected, but it was still just as good. If any of you don't know the plot, it's the story of how Bruce Wayne becomes Batman. And Nolan really showed what someone (a real person without powers) would have to endure to become a superhero.

Cillian Murphy made a wicked Scarecrow. Wicked in both senses of the word. Evil and awesome at the same time! He actually tried out for the part of Batman, but decided it didn't fit him. And it doesn't, he fits his part just fine. Howard Stern almost played this part....boy, am I glad he didn't.

Katie Holmes got on my nerves. (I'm probably biased since I wanted to jump off something really high when a friend made me see First Daughter...*gag* It was her birthday, I had no choice.) But I have to give her some credit though because she had brains...at least until she tried to fight off some bad guys.

There were a couple corny lines in there somewhere, but they didn't deflect from the awesome special effects, strong characters and great backgrounds! And the surprise twist just made it even better!

I wasn't too hot on the idea of Batman's new mode of transportation (nothing beats the Batmobile), but the Tumbler proved to be a pretty wicked ride.

The soundtrack was great too. Hans Zimmer worked on it (he also did Pirates of the Carribean). I'm just going to have to buy both the movie and soundtrack.

Ok, I'm done sharing! I hope you all go see it!!

yes well, this is an OLD topic but hey, I joined a little while back and am REALLY bored right now, so here goes:

Boingo, in Batman Begins, his "new mode of transportation" isn't really his "new mode of trasportation"...it's his old one. He had that BEFORE he had his Batmobile.

A small list of movies includes Sgt. Bilko, the fast and the furious, 2 fast 2 furious (although the storyline wasn't that great, it had more action than the first) U-571 ( one of the best) X-Men, LOTRs, National Treasure...and that's enough for me.

P.S. the best quote comes from Sgt. Bilko "...what's that called again?" "A Full House" "Full House, what a cute name"

Are they remaking the first Batman? I heard they were considering it, but really didn't want to. If Nolan wants to put his talents to good use, I think he should redo Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. Joel Schumacher.... Don't get me wrong, I loved Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey as the villans, but Val Kilmer was no Batman and Chris O'donnell...*snort*I just won't go there.

Michael Keaton was such a great Batman and Jack Nicholson was the best Joker. I can't imagine Mark Hamill as him; he'll always be Luke Skywalker to me. *bats eyes*

I feel very strongly about this, if you can't tell! :) I hope they don't remake the rest of the Batmans...I'm cheap and don't want to buy them all over again, but I know I won't be able to help myself!!

Yeah... I kind of hope they don't remake the batmans. The first few were good, but Batman Forever started the slow downfall of the movies. I honestly liked the batman movies better when he is solo. I'd rather have them just make another story that hasn't been told with another batman villain because batman begins was really good and as long as they stick to this method they could keep making more..... oh and yeah definately NO Chris O'donnell!!!

Those were actually two different movies. And the one with Arnold was awful, although I liked Mr. Freeze. It was Batman and Robin. And how could you not like Batman Returns?! And you call me your twin...psh. :P Just kidding, everyone has their own tastes.

And just for the record: Mark Hamill is only rumored to be the number one contender to play the Joker in the next movie. It's too soon to tell.

Anime-Ghost in the Shell, Vampire Hunter D, anything DragonballZ(I know, I'm a dork but I cant help it)

Well I'm not saying this was a bad movie at all, but I really liked Batman Returns and the Original. I loved Tommie lee Jones and Jim Carrie in the movie, but once robin was introduced the movies kind of lost their way... Yes, Batman and Robin is the worst batman movie I should have said this brought the downfall because Batman Forever was good, but putting robin into the story led to bad things, (terrible terrible things) But now that their back on track I look forward to the new movies!!!

Ok, I've seen a lot of movies lately started with star wars, then batman, to Mr. and Mrs. Smith and finished with the War of the Worlds. Now Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a great movie, it's an action comedy, I thought the acting between pitt and jolie were excellent and it is just a fun movie to see, so I'd strongly recommend it  . Now on War of the Worlds... I liked this movie mostly due to the special effects, I loved the aliens in the movie and the eeeary sound they made... however there were downfalls the acting was not bad but not great either, but the effects are worth it I thought. The worst part about this movie was the ending, no I won't spoil it at all, but it ended way way too abrupt, needed clarity. I didn't think it was awful, I'd say its decent, just go to see the effects and don't expect too much else... but this is just my opinion. :?

ah yes... super troopers is a hometown favorite here in batavia, you'll hear lines quoted from it often... also by that writer was Club Dread, which wasn't great but it had some funny scenes with all the same characters as super troopers.... and I hear they're thinking of making a sequel to this instant classic!
Also, did anyone look past tom cruise's average to bad performance to see the special effects, :( I hope I'm not flying solo on this one.. hmmm *crickets churping* *tumble weed passes by*, guess so

[tumble weed passes by my feet] Ok, the special effects were good, but that will only carry a movie so far. I mean, everything else about the movie was horrible. I actually was looking around the theatre to see if everyone was actually paying attention to what was going on. I guess everyone is a critic, right?

Ok, I have never even heard of any of those movies you mentioned above there. I guess that is bad.

I will give my opinion on the War of the Worlds movie. I thought it was just horrible. I wanted to leave during the movie it was so bad. I still haven't seen the new Batman movie which everyone keeps telling me is good. I need to go and see it, I guess. I want to see the Wonka movie, too. I liked the original one, so I'm curious to see how the new one compares to it.

Boondock Saints was excellent. So was SuperTroopers. Not a fan of Memento or American Psycho but the rest of the list is good. War of the Worlds was excellent until the end. It ends abruptly and without explanation til the last sentence of the movie. Almost unforgiveable but the rest of the movie was very well done. Fantastic Four was good and the new Batman was surprisingly good. Lots of chameos. Any movie with Gary Oldman gets an A+ from me.

Yeah, Fantastic Four was a lot better than I thought it would be. I wouldn't have even gone to see it but my friend bought tickets for opening night. I'm actually glad I saw it. there were some pretty funny parts in it, but it was serious too. I'd applaud it. =D>

Movie Stuff

Wow lotta replies haha. Yeah boondock saints and super troopers were really good. American psycho is a really hard movie to swallow, but something about it really intrigues me. Christian Bale (New batman, Equilibrium, The Machinist) is a very very good and very very dedicated actor. After he did American Psycho and Equilibrium (in that horrid dragon movie ring of fire as well I think), he did The Machinist.

For the Machinist, he had to lose a large amount of weight (In American Psycho he was BUILT, I mean RIPPED). To do this he had nothing but one apple and one latte a day for several months, getting down to a sickening 100 lbs. He looks like a completely different person in this movie, its really freaky after having seen American Psycho so very many times.

The Machinist itself is a pretty dang good movie, very dark and messes with your head.

The really amazing thing is- Just 5 months after shooting the machinist at around only ONE HUNDER pounds... he shot Batman Begins. I don't know how he can do something like that, its just amazing.

Its really weird for me to hear him talk off of the set, as he has a very thick british accent.

I could go on and on about american Psycho, but I would never stop typing =P. I definately don't recommend it for everyone, escecially those easily offended. Very dark. Very very dark. . . I love it =)
