What? Where's that Wanker?

Eh, in case anyone was wondering where I've been for the last little while (doubtful) or cares (haha even more doubtful) my hard drive is spazzing and gave me a S.M.A.R.T. error a little while ago so I had to offload almost all my data (including UT :p). It booted the last few times without it but it's kinda like waiting for the other shoe to drop. In any case I'll prob won't be on for awhile but I'll try to get on sometime before 3 months is up and Druid nukes my guy ._. . Cya guys later

Sorry to hear about the hard drive. You know, you'd be surprised how inexpensive HDs are these days... Sounds like time for a replacement before it fails...

My guess is that they really don't know what it means! Try walking around a street near me in the UK and calling someone 'Wanker'... It doesn't bother me in the slightest, but I guess the rules are there for everybody.

As I said above, the name really doesn't bother me at all. I've never been online when Wanker has been playing, so I really can't comment on his conduct. I'm sure he's a good guy judging from the replies in this thread. The only thing I do find dubious is how the rules don't seem to apply here, yet they apply to everyone else. Yes, I can understand that many people in the US won't know what it means. But the trouble is that I find that quite a xenophobic attitude to have. To assume that every player who frequents the Disastrous Consequences server is American is ridiculous! The online UT2004 community is an International one, and if you do want to impose rules upon them such as the 'no swearing' rule, you need to adhere to all users. To excuse someone because they're a friend is a breach of the agreement presented to the user on their first visit to the server. Let me give you an example. My signature below was censored by Druid, a quote from the move 'They Live', due to the original inclusion of the 'A' word instead of 'butt'. I'm fine with this as a) the word in the UK has lost all negative connotation, thus no longer rendering it a swear word, but I can understand its status in the US and so might offend some viewers, and b) it conforms to the rules set down by Druid and Shantara. This is in no way a personal attack on HYA Wanker.

Ess Jay I wasnt implying that you had a problem with HYA, although reading your post you obviousely think its wrong he hasnt had to change his name. To the point here, I realize dc has an international player community. But you cant expect dc to know or learn all inappropriate words and phrases from all the different languages of the players on the server. It's not xenophobic, it's realistic. most of the players, and all of the administrators and the server owners are americans. I'm not being arrogant, thats just the way the numbers shake out on this server. The language that we all speak and understand is English(from the left side of the pond:)), so thats what we enforce. DC does have a wide variety of nationalities playing on the server and that is really cool, but its a small family owned and operated server, not an international company. P.S. HYA Wanker I dont believe knew a single person here when he joined, just like you and me. He just got a break. No worries mate!(I'm working on it)

Hey, I'm sorry if it sounded like I was shooting off. And yes, I can understand that policing every different culture is rather akin to that old needle and haystack saying! In retrospect, I guess it's all about respect. Although the offending word may have some bad effects when spoken amongst certain cultures, the majority rules. The minority have to respect that, and the majority have to respect the minority in the same way. We're all here for fun, so I do apologise for bringing a bad cloud to the whole affair. All I was doing was voicing my concern, and I hope you can respect that. Swearing doesn't offend me in the slightest, so I can pretty much live with it. Anyway, who's for a cold beer? :D

Okay, so here's our "official" response/gizmo/whatever, and then all of us of the legal age can go have a cold beer. :) We do happen to understand the meaning of the word, and argued over disallowing it outright. This is the conclusion we came to: Much as we might wish differently, we don't speak enough other languages to be able to police everything. Somebody could come on and start saying nasty stuff in Romanian that would get them banned in English, but we wouldn't know. Therefore, it does not seem fair from our point of view to say we'll just ban you for the few words in other languages or cultures that we do understand without looking for all words from that language or culture that are nasty. It also seems like an incredible ordeal to attempt to do so. As it is, we spend a lot of time reviewing chat logs and such just for American-English nastiness. So, we're restricting it to just American culture. If someone from another culture were to find something offensive from their culture that we didn't catch and report it to us, we would certainly be happy to deal with it then. Otherwise, we'll assume nothing untoward is happening. P.S. How are ya, Wank?

Ok, so here's my 2c on this... When Wanker first signed on, here was how our conversation went..

Should we ask him to change his name? Well, is it a swear word? No. At least not in the location where the server is housed. Is it derogatory towards other people? Well I dont think so. It's not like he's calling someone else a wanker... In fact he's labeling himself as a wanker... Is it appropriate language? Well it's really questionable.. Ok we'll just watch him closely and see if he does anything against the server rules then.

Had he signed on and in those first few games broken the rules, he would have been banned without a warning, because he was already on slightly weak footing. However, Wanker turned out to be a really fun person to play with. And on that note, I end my garbldegook

Whoa, didn't know I started a controversy >.>. Um my hard drive is still here... and hasn't given an error again... I dunno, I put it through the usual paces (ex scandisk, seagate diagnostics) and they came up negative so I have no clue why it gave me the s.m.a.r.t. error in the first place so I'll probably start dropping junk back onto here and be back on the server sometime soon. On another note I've been playing Maple Story a lot which would explain my absence. Oh btw the avatar is the guy on the train from Eurotrip. He was great and that grin is the greatest haha.

Strike that, I second and quite possibly third what the other guys say about getting a new hard drive. You can get a 160 gig for about $70. So it's a pretty good deal.

I dont want to start an arguement or anything, but i have to say that what passes as inappropriate names and what does not can be quite strange sometimes. I've seen somebody with the word "commie" in their name enter DC, and was told to change their name or be banned, while the word "wanker" is allowed. I dont know how it is in the US, but here in the land of Oz, calling somebody a "wanker" is a flat insult and will probably land you getting punched in the face. It is also a word used to insult gays especially. Well I'm not the admin of the server, so if Dru/Shan think it appropriate, then...well...yeah, but if it were my server, it would be practically an instant ban for having the word "wanker" in their name.
