I've been noticing that sometimes that player voice chat on the server gets way off topic. Sometimes a few people will have entire conversations that have nothing to do with the game, gaming, etc. It gets a little irritating when the rest of us have to endure people talking on end about where they went on vacation, which spyware software to use, their relationships with the oposite sex. Frankly, I play UT to get away from the real world, not to be reminded of it by a few people who use the voice chat on the server as a means to socialize online...

Any comments?

Here's my two cents:

If I did not want to socialize, I would play single player. If that were so, I would have been sick of this game long ago. I sign on to the server to see my friends, and see how their lives are going. So if you are looking for a server where people only talk about Unreal, then this one is not it, and I hope it never becomes that way.

That being said, there is a difference between a little bit of chat, and consuming the public channel with chatspam that no one or only one other person is listening to. If people are chatspamming, having off-game conversation during the last several waves (which makes it hard for the living players to hear the monsters at crucial moments), or having discussions that do not follow the rules of our server in some other way, the admins would certainly like to know. I would recommend gently pointing out to the individual/s first that they are interfering with your game experience, and if they continue to chatspam, email us.

I do a lot of observing as well. If there is any particular person talking away about a subject i really don't care about, I block them in my voice chat options in the menu's.
Its not that hard to do at all. I keep my favorite Talkers on there. I think I have blocked out all but 8 people. These 8 people, in my opinion, are worth hearing.

i don't mind the voice chatting much at all...i find it sometimes enjoyable hearing the conversations had and the comeraderie inherent in many of you all with each other. sad thing is, the music often drowns out a lot of what people say, and when i have a weapon or artifact i want to give and someone tries to tell me who they are, i often have to ask them to type their name o_o also, many maps have no music, so its even more welcome!

the one thing that can be annoying are some who keep pestering for a map choice or such, that i have found. its rare, but once in awhile there is a whiny-wanty opionated person.

and i am too why for vocal chatty myself, even if i could do it *^_^*

I, personally, enjoy the voice chat immensely. It would be extremly dissapointing to not be able to talk to, or just listen to, the varity of people available on the server. It is nice to log on and hear the porverbial "Hey, Norm" (if you don't know what that means, your too young to remember, watch tv land ) And to do that in turn when someone jumps on, if only for a few minutes, to see how everything is going.
I guess what I'm saying is, yes the points matter, and the playing, the mod is kewl, and the adren rush is great when you beat a personal best, but they wouldn't mean squat with out the voices of our friends chearing you on when you make that level, or their genuin concern if they hear your voice is a little down and they try to get you to crack a smile, even though they can't see it.
Yes, the spammers can get unruley at times, but most of those people don't last long when blasted by regulars (which helps) and the thunder bolt (shhhzzzablam) of power which are the admins. All in all, it's worth it.

The chat is ok, I don't mind hearing it much, only mind when someone is ranting at another for no reason or for a valid reason, but its just distracting sometimes. But the ocasional "how're you, welcome back, glad you can join, did you get the file", etc are ok by my book, but when it switches to "did you read the news about the problem in predrekistan, the oil price is gonna raise, did you put detergent 1st instead of bleach?" those are kinda annoying (just examples mind you)

I prefer text, usually best when you're dead and distracts the less.

One final note, guys, not all of us are english-speaking-born, remember, speak clearly, slowly and avoid chewing gum when talking
Even after so many years I still loose track of what someone is saying pretty easily.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that all the Voice Chat is bad. I enjoy most of it-and if people want to say hi to their buddies when they log on, fine. If they want to say "how are you?" fine. "Congrats on the level" fine. "I just got off work and I'm glad to be here" fine. But randomn conversations that last 6,7 waves, heck, the whole MAP, that are about the dating scene in Timbuktu or configuring your registry to get rid of spyware or taking your cat to the vet, I think are out of order.

I know it can be a pain sometimes, but just figure out who is conversing, and temporarily disable their voice chat in your settings. You won't hear them and you'll enjoy your game a little more.
I personally don't hear people talking like you say they are. Most of the people that I have enabled respect the community enough to keep it to game chat!

Well i personaly love the voice chat! I like to hear everyone and what they have to say! The different accents and such as well. Honestly thats one of my favorite things about this game and the reason i play online. If i didnt want to hear anyone, i would have continued to play by my self. Like Shanty said. But i think that the voice chat is what makes this game fun. If you dis like hearing me, block me! But just to let you know i love hearing all of you guys!

I can relate to shrike... mainly I think it's cause of the time of play. I know early morning (like 2-3 am eastern) there can be a few punks on the server that just talk about whatever for the whole map.... None of the regulars mind ya, just random people running their mouths for 30 minutes about nothing Majority of em I never see again. I've never seen this problem at "normal" hours... only the extremes... i THINK that's what shrike is talking about, since I only see him at those hours.

I'll have to apologize then since this is probably mostly due to last night when everyone was talking waaaay off topic. I didn't say anything because everyone on the server were individuals that I knew to be older, they were regular players, and it was very late in the night. So, I didn't think it would bother people to let them talk about whatever it is they wanted to. Just as long as there wasn't any swearing. So again, I will stand here and apologize.

Most of the time I enjoy listening to people talk, (including last night). I myself dont talk much so I listen. Most people know when enough is enough, some dont. I have to admit that last night I enjoyed listening more than playing. There is nothing wrong with talking as long as you dont take it too far. If you have a problem with talking just block their chat or ask them to ease up. Most of the time people will be respectful and not talk so much if you ask them.
